Turntable buyee advise

Posted by: Ian Preston on 03 August 2001

I have been considering buying one for sometime.

Not wanting to be in too much of a hurry I resisted buying the Rega Planar3(new) instead having MM boards fitted to my Nait3, buying some 2nd hand vinyl and searching the appropriate sales columns in readiness for the new member.

Quality 2nd hand turntables are something of a rarity in New zealand it seems.

However I spied a Linn axis, basic tonearm, ortofon cart today going for around 100ukp. 10 years old and lighty used (apparently)

Apart from anything really obvious, what should I consider before purchasing? The owner lives in another town so a home trial isnt possible.

Is the linn a match for the Rega? considering its 1/4 the price

Any comments welcome

Regards

I used to have an Axis, and my cousin has a Planar, and, while I've never compared them in the same system, I thought my Axis was a lot better. Not hearing them in the same system may make this a worthless piece of information, though.

The Axis is the better music machine when it's got an Akito on it. The Basik brings things down a fair bit.

I've seen a number of Axis turntables turn up with blown power supplies. Maybe I've been unlucky, but I think this may be on the rise. If Linn products are easy to service (e.g. dealer not too far away), then the Axis would be my choice I think. If Linn products are not easy to service, go with the Rega.

Frank.

Well I went ahead and purchased the afore-mentioned. The owner was a retired english guy.
He showed off the axis in his impressive looking system (physically at least). A 100watt pre/power Plinius job with some massive new zealand made speakers (cant remember the name).
Included in the deal was a Ortofon T30 transformer and a seperate MC cartridge which he reckond sounded better and I would agree. This was a lot older cartridge but since he went to digital he has had little use of the turntable.
He wasn,t lying because I left with all his vinyl for an additional 50 NZ$(15ukp). Lots of english pressed classical in great nick. ( had to take his country and western as well however.)
This is my longest posting on this excellent forum and the reason is Im delighted with what Im hearing. The merits of vinyl have been well established and I wont attempt a clumsy appraisal here except to say this will be my prefered listening medium from now on.

Right on Ian!

You'll love the Axis, but you may as well start saving up for an LP-12; you've obviously bitten by the bug.
