Sugden V's Nap 500
Posted by: woodface on 31 January 2001
I called into a dealers today while out and about on business and heard a Sugden Audition amp playing into some small Dynaudios. Overall this set up was very good, it was smooth and lifelike and sounded a lot more expensive than it's price. They also had a Nap 500 on dem (the main reason why I dropped in!)he was keen to show it off but it kept blowing fuses! What a beast! I asked him if it was any good and he replied 'it's very good at blowing fuses'. I do hope that this is not a common occurence for those with deep enough pockets.

It is if the dealer, or the loudspeaker, who shorted the speaker cables!!
Other than that, or a fault, I cannot offer any other explanation... sadly.

Please which dealer?

Twice in my life I witnessed dealers who tried hard to show how bad is Naim. They wanted to sell the competitions.
This story reminds me them both.
BTW, woodface, if I was the one who posted such a story, there are members here who .... don't want to think about what they would be able to do to me....

PS - Thomas, how are you today ?

I really wish I hadn't posted this thread!

Damn the pesky 500! I'd put a bigger fuse in, then loosen my shoes for a 'socks blown off' scenario. Anyway Sugden vs Naim. Who knows? The Sugden's from Yorkshire that puts it at huge advantage though. And it works.

Do yourselves a favour and listen to the Sugden Masterclass power amp. I was in the market for a 500 or a Chord but the Sugden simply sounds better in every situation, and it is so cheap in comparison (3000 GBP)

Which versions of Watts/Puppies do you use. They've changed somewhat over the years?

Hi
I could only afford the 3/2 second hand (5000 GBP). The upgrades are available but I din't know if I'd trust the importer to do this as Wison advise a factory fit. Also, the cost of the upgrade could well be a case of diminishing returns. New foam grilles are 50 quid for God's sake.

I have heard and like the sugden amps. However,to my ears a pair of 135,s offer a more enjoyable musical experience. As for a 500, well I think it blows the sugden stuff out of the water. Only my opinion!

I just checked out their website. I hope the Sugdens sound better than they look!

Thank you for asking. I was not feeling too great yesterday. Perhaps my backbone was out of tune ... or was it that my glasses weren't set up properly ...

Woodface (interesting moniker...)-
I presume that you are referring to the IEC-sized T10A fuse located on the rear of the 500PS. As such, the 500PS typically will blow the fuses on the internal rail before the one on the rear goes.
This indicates a reasonably serious fault inside the unit and should require service, not leaving out on display to:
a) dissuade a prospective buyer
b) damage a(nother) pair of loudspeakers
c) blow the house circuit fuse / breaker.
If the (authorised) dealer has not or is not willing to get it back to Salisbury on his own, perhaps you should consider another shop.

Anthony,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I just figured out what it was: I still had the metal shoes on. I’ve exchanged them with those little 3M jobs and whaddayasay – much better!

Thomas,
Put the system on a sofa and find a Mana to relex on it. The Mana is such a wonder - maybe can cure backbone pains ? (you can also use the beautiful made glass shelves as glasses)
