So, some people still not found what they're looking for from this album... Roll Eyes

I will grab a copy of the vinyl when it appears - stonking album.

It would be nice if it made a big difference but the original was such a flat and murky production it qould be hard to imagine it being worse!

The only U2 album I've bought that still gets a spin.

Agreed - great music but lousy production on the original, hope the re-master is a LOT better. This is one case when I'd definitely say vinyl beats CD, I remember my 12" single of With or Without You sounding excellent - pity I don't own a TT now.

Same was true of the CD single IIRC. Which makes you think it should be possible.

Does anyone know if the MFSL version was any good?

Listening to the new remaster as I write this. I think it sounds great - The Edge oversaw the remaster and I think he has done a fine job. It's a lovely package by the way - very well done.

Haven't heard the MFSL Steve but some people say it is vg. However there is also a group of people that reckon the first Japanese pressing is the one to get on this title. I have just won one in an eBay acution so will let you know. What I think it sounds like.

One thing though the MFSL goes for about 50 squid plus. The cheapest I have seen recently is about 40 squid.

Oh dear. 0/10 I’m afraid.

The media are supplied in cardboard sleeves. Both audio CDs are scratched to hell. Very poor quality packaging, CDs almost certainly damaged as a result of it.

Not recommended.

Sound quality? I don’t know. It’s gone back to Amazon for a refund.

Cheers

Well I just got my copy of the Japanese cd first pressing and all I can say is wow and I mean with a capital W.

Fantastic sound, clean as a whistle, bass really kicks out of the speakers, no excess treble, wonderful pressing.

E,

Where did you get it?

Got it by pure luck on a Buy it Now off eBay from a guy in Japan. They may get cheaper now the remaster has come out. However you usually have to pay through the nose for it.

But I have to be honest I always liked the disc but never liked the too trebly sound of it but this one you can yank up the volume and it just gets clearer. The recording is wonderfully spacious, each instrutment in it's own place and echo round them.

I have a plumber friend of mine in the house doing a job for me at the moment. He wants a copy now- he's big fan of theirs. He also has the new remaster and prefers my Jap version to it.

Hope you can get one and if there is any help I can offer you to get a copy let me know.

Ewemon,

Can you tell me what year this Cd you refer to was released?

If you could e-mail me (see profile) I would be most grateful.

Cheers

Picked up a Japanese "War" CD last week. Must say it is better than my EU copy. So I dare say the same would be true here.

Thanks for the steer, E.

I know what you mean Munch. But there is something about the rawness of Lillywhite's production for "War" that seems appropriate for the music, to me.

Other albums, like The Joshua Tree, seemed to demand better and were sold short.

The Japanese copy (of War) seems to be less strident than my EU copy, but I'll do a comparison at some point.

Yeah I did the same with a couple of Ry Cooder Japanese discs. Both went for about £5-6 each. I was choked.

E,

RE Ry Cooder, which pressings do you prefer, I bought the latest jap remasters, they seem a bit better but certainly not what I was hoping for!

The early WG pressings are fine and about the best there is out there. The Japanese remasters were done by someone who seemed to think that making the masters louder was the way forward. Sound vg at low volumes but not when you turn them up. Personally I am not that keen on them. I have a set that will be going onto eBay shortly along with the Little Feat discs.

I have a couple of first Japanese Ry 32X pressings but the difference between them and the original WG is minute. Not worth spending the extra readies on.

One other thing, I haven't heard the very first US pressing of Ry Cooders which were probably flat transfers.

The only ones I have heard are the RE-1 discs (you will see this on the inner matrix) which were WB secret remaster for cd's in the mid 80's. Whether or not they did Ry I can't be sure as IMHO they sound the same as the WG discs. So I don't think they did. They certainly didn't do all their roster of artists i.e. Neil Young but did The Eagles.

Stick with the WG is my advice. But if they sound good on your system then enjoy them.

A lovely mint Joshua Tree Japanese 1st pressing came through my door this morning, (thanks Ewen).

And wow, just the ticket - sooo much better than any other pressing I have heard. I am thrilled with this, its really really good.

Thanks Ewen, e-mail on its way to you tomorrow.

I am glad you like it Peter. It is so easy on the ear. Glad I could help in getting you a copy. Now for the other disc you want.

I saw a Rickie Lee Jones Magazine target today going for not a lot but would need to search it out again if you want it.
Posted on: 16 February 2008 by Right Wing
I saw two RLJ Magazine targets on ebay tonight, didnt you say they are not much better than the original pressings?

I would like the Pirates or her first album on target first I think. None on ebay as yet . .

How is your Pirates Japanense 20P2 sounding?

Munch,

I compared the original one you refer to earlier today, whilst its not as bad as the latest ones, I prefer this japanese one by quite a margin.
