Quick electrical / Part P question...

Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 09 April 2009

Morning
I let out a flat and the shower unit needs replacing. As landlord I need to have this done professionally, and the plumber has told me that he needs an electrician to complete the task

The job he cannot do involves a junction box behind the shower unit; the mains cabling is not long enough for the new unit and as he has to "break the circuit" to replace the flex, he needs a sparky.

Are my Spidey senses tingling correctly or am I just Mr. Paranoid?

TIA

Dear Mr Paranoid,

I think he may be right, he could do the job himself but it would need to be inspected by a registered person. A sparky who is Part-P registered can do it and certify it himself.

Either way, better to be safe than sorry, you don't want frazzled tenants.

and there was me thinking that you had persuaded your other half to let you have a spur put in...

I think you know netter than that, Simon....
If / when I get a spur put in, it will be done by stealth when she is away seeing her sister in Ireland...

The cable goes from the shower back to a double pole switch [pull cord] and then from the switch to the rcb [fuse box], this would only need a sparky if you are up rating your showers power say from 8.5kw up to say a 10.5kw. if he wanted he could just replace the cable from the switch to the shower, so long as you are not up rating the power

Surely it would be an easy task for someone who managed the cunning hi-cap to super-cap swap...

Just promise to re-decorate and she'll never know

The pull-switch is in, no worries on that front. The location of the junctioin box is *directly* behind the shower unit, which has to be removed for access. The new shower unit requires a slightly longer run of flex from this junction box, which the plumber says needs to be done by a sparky becuase of part P.

I'm thinking that straight swaps do not need an electrician.

There should not be a jct box behind the shower it should be a single run from the switch to the shower, just replace it

well there is a junction box behind the shower, so replacing it with a single run is not really a cost-effective answer.

I would suggest that you speak to a friendly sparky if you can because the law`s change all the time, and in 23 yrs of being a plumber i have never heard of a jct box behind the shower because of a possibilty of water ingress.
This is the best option now, speak to a qualified spark. Smile

Shower replaced, junction box removed and I've found a sparks who would not laugh at the thought of a single spur...

Hi Mike,

Reg 526.3 states 'Every connection shall be accessible for inspection, testing and maintenance'.

I would replace the whole run of cable , making sure you have the right size cable and protective device in place.

eg 7.5kw-9kw 40 mcb and 10mm cable
9.5kw and above require 45A mcb with 16mm cable above 10.5kw.
Current wiring regs also state that this should be protected by a 30ma RCD.

A part P registered Electrician should do this and provide you with a Minor Works certificate.

Hope this helps.

Why not find a Part P electrician who is handy with a spanner to do the plumbing as if Gas is not involved the plumbing does not require certification.

Mike, glad all is sorted, now all you need to do is keep that sparky sweet and make him one of your best mates. it will be worth it in the long run.
