Tuner question

Posted by: Stephen Bennett on 05 July 2001

If I end up with a 72/hi/140 I may have to think of changing my Quad FM3 tuner to something more the size of the Naim 1/2 racks. Don't all shout 'Naim tuner', unless you are offering me one for under £100!

Is there anything else available, that is in the ball park of my FM3 that will slot in neatly next to a 72?

Regards

Stephen

One of my friends, who used to work in Foyles, told me someone came into the shop asking for a 6 foot lenght of books which were 2 inches deep.

Even allowing for some of the obscure and obtuse postings on this forum, this one is a doozy

.... but difficult. What you need is an Onix tuner. But they were rare new, I've NEVER seen one 2nd hand. They were very well respected though and AFAIK about half the price of a NAT02

Hi Stephen,

Or.... You could try an old-style Cyrus FM-tuner.
I sometimes find 'em on the internet for about 100 - 150 UKP.

It looks good, sounds pretty good and has a similar size as the old Naim shoebox series.

Good luck with it.

Greetings,

ALco.

For your ideas. Perhaps I should have said that the tuner is used for casual radio 4 listening, and I assumed you wouldn't recommend anything crap!

Size IS important in this case - unless I want the tuner to be in another room to the rest of the system. We don't all have mansions:-)

Ion Systems did a range of shoe-box sized tuners that complement the Naim style very well.

I'm not sure how they sounded, but their amplifiers were terrific and shared similar musical characteristics to Naim.

Sadly the company no longer exists, but you may be lucky enough to track one down second-hand.

I second the recommendation for the Onix, I want one of them myself. Another option is a second hand Sugden T48 which was always a great sounding tuner. The old Meridian tuner that matched the 101b pre would fit the bill too.
