282/200

Posted by: Billy Rubin on 19 July 2007

Trading up from 112/FC2/150 to 282/200.

Not sure if I'd be better off retaining the FC2 to power the 282 or letting it go and powering the 282 from the 200.

Putting aside cost implications of not trading in the FC2 for a moment, does anyone have any strong feelings about this?

Thanks, Billy R

forget it. the 200 powers a 282 way better. i tested it with my 202 and the FC2 was not very convincing. it works best with the 5 series.

Would an Olive Hicap do a better job of powering the 282 than the 200?

If so, you could flog the Flatcap and put the money towards the Hicap.

Agreed.

I wasn't convinced that a new Hi-Cap did a better job, the improvements were subtle when I demo'd it. Super-Cap is another story.

Billy - just give the basic 282/200 a go - it's very very good.

Thanks for the replies.

ROTF - apart from the SC, I'll shortly have the same set-up as you. Any comments?

Hi Billy

Yes - I haven't thought about upgrading any part of this system for quite a while - well perhaps a hi-line. It seems like I've found what I was after.

There have been some magic moments when great music has been retrieved from mediocre CDs - the good ones continue to sound good.

The winner for me is the emotion that comes through. It doesn't matter what the style of music - if you like that style then you're going to like it on this system.

The other good thing is I don't feel inclined to play with the system - there are no longer thoughts of - well if I slip a Seismic Sink under the pre-amp will it ..... such thoughts don't occur, as I'm too busy either listening to a new CD or rediscovering an old one.

That's another effect - I seldom yearn for a new re-master, the version I have seems to shine through.

I'm really very pleased with what I have.

So my recommendation is follow Naim's recommendations for setting it all up - get the Allaes close to a wall. They were designed to work that way and they sure do (I know it's room dependent). Don't put the electronics between the speakers and keep the powered components away from the un-powered ones as much as you can. 5m lengths of NACA5 work well too.

The other thing is using a dedicated spur for your Naim kit - it seems to like this.

Most of all have fun and enjoy the music.

Oh and bad news is losing the desire to upgrade doesn't save you money, as you just buy more music.
