Clearly, the Naim DAC was designed specifically for me...

Unbelievable!

I could not be happier with the DAC and how it has transformed my system; I damn near danced a hole in my floor this thing is GOOOOOOOOD! I just got it so it will be interesting to see how its sound develops over the next few months.

I was a little concerned what with all the mediocre reviews concerning Toslink and computer sources, in my case an Apple TV. The way some people around here talk, you'd think you'd need no less than a CDX2, and a 555PS or HDX in order to hear anything acceptable out of the DAC. Nonsense. It only took a moment of hearing the MUSIC coming out of my system to put such concerns to rest. I am under no illusions, I'm not writing this to say that an Apple TV plus DAC will spank a CDS3 or anything like that, just that the performance with a computer source over optical is spectacular.

The DAC has also transformed my AV experience, where my previous DAC (DacMagic) just fell to pieces. Action movies have always been a pain to watch on my PS3 because I had to constantly adjust the volume in order to hear voices or explosions at adequate volume. No more. With the DAC the volume of the sound mix is now homogenized and I can set one comfortable volume that works for both voices and exploding starships, whispers and IEDs. And all with a kind of silky smooth presentation that just gets out of the way and lets me enjoy the movie.

With the DAC my system now envelops the listener in music. I can no longer tell where my speakers are, there's just music in the room. I can listen at much higher volumes too. The grating edge that increased fatigue at high volume with my previous DAC is gone. The Naim DAC has really rounded out the bass, which is the greatest improvement over what my system did before. Bass is now much more full *and* tuneful, the sound has a solidity and power which is simply... delicious. It's like great chocolate. The overall effect is akin to being immersed in music, it is no longer in front of me but surrounding me with incredible clarity, presence and rhythm. Bravo Naim, well done. Well freakin' done!

sounds like the DAC is doing the business for a wide range of systems!
Good innit?

Excellent perspective and far from the polarized dichotomy of views here. Generally little middle ground to be found. It can be very good while still allowing for even better. Smile

hi Naijeru,
how do you feed your DAC?
Does your ATV has enough capacity for your music?
Thanks (and enjoy:-)

Naijeru,

Hey am also in NYC and waiting for my DAC to connect my Apple TV to. One question, what cable do you use to connect the ATV optical out to the Naim DAC.

On the post from t38.45 about capacity, once I get this working I am sending my Apple TV away so it is physically modded for an external drive

Hi David,

I use a Transparent toslink cable to connect my ATV.

Ralf, my collection clocks in at just under 100GB so ATV is fine for now. Going forward I'm considering a Mini + NAS. That's going to require some more thought though.

Hey,

Have not modded but planning to, there is a guy on ebay who gets great reviews, who will take your ATV apart, remove drive, insert a connector to an external hard drive and send it back to you with hard drive formatted and ready to go. He will also just insert up to a 500gb drive into the unit, but I figure if I am hacking the machine may as well get connection to external storage. I expect the damn thing will fail at some point,

I am also aware of the software hack to enable the USB port to become an active connection to an external drive but my assessment is that this is still buggy. Every time there is an Apple Software Upgrade you need to rehack it or do without the upgrade. If you do without the upgrade but upgrade your computer, your computer may not see the ATV. Strikes me as a bit messy.

I will be doing this shortly and will post on how it goes. I cannot see any reason why it would affect audio quality. Any counter views?

Best

I'm really glad for your email. I have been able to find little information about the Dac with the ATV. I'm not interested in replacing my CDX with a gazillion dollar CD player and intend to listen primarily from my iTunes library. I have an ATV and have ordered the Naim Dac sight unseen. Who knows when it might arrive.

What other components do you own? I own an older Nac 182 with two High Caps and a Nap 180 amplifier. The Dac was quite expensive and I'm hopeful the money is well spent with my system. I also currently use the Dac Magic, which was just good enough to convince me that music from a computer can be pretty good. Hopefully, with the Naim Dac it will sing.

I can't wait.

Wow you are brave Jeff! I actually ordered the DAC without demoing with my gear which is a big no no, but I did at least hear it. However, given that you're using a DacMagic and relatively pleased with that, I think you're in for a treat!
