anyone use an HDMI switch?

I need to put 2 HDMI inputs (blu Ray player and sky box)into a switcher to feed one output. Does anyone use one? Does the unit have to be powered from the wall or not? Are there obvious quality issues to look out for or are these switches pretty much the same?

I have used a VIVO HDMI switch in the past (got it from Amazon). Needs to be connected to the mains, but was very reliable, and worked OK with my Harmony remote, though IIRC I had to make the Harmony "learn" its commands.

I use a Gefen unit to switch between n-Vi and V+ box. It's a very good unit. Its also got a very sensitive IR receiver so its hidden away on a bracket on the wall behind my rack - also controlled with a Harmony remote.

Thanks for the responses. Seems there are many on the market but was wondering if they all needed a power supply.

Most do - not a lot of current available to run a switcher from any of the HDMI connections. Its a tiny linear wall wart.

I am allergic to wall warts, so I found a 3 into 1 auto-switcher (at John Lewis I think) which powers off the HDMI, and works well, with no appreciable drop in quality. If you have no luck, I'll get the torch out and try and read the type number

I don't personally use one, but being a fan of their HDMI cables, I would have faith in Chord's Matrix switching unit...Guaranteed for 1080P and all current HD audio....

Comes bundled with a remote for switching and also has x2 outputs (which if not needed now, may become handy down the line)...

Personally, I wouldn't want to skimp too much on any device in the chain passing on my video + audio signals...

Appreciate the pain of having to supply power, but seems to be a requirement on most of them as James says - perhaps much like a powered USB hub giving generally trouble free use with higher powered items in comparison to their passive equivalents....

Found it.

It requires no external power, and switches inputs automatically. I have to use this for my Pioneer, as the media box only has one HDMI input. Works fine with nVi and Humax Foxsat HDR, although on the latter, sometimes the HDCP switching causes a green screen. But I think that's a problem with the Pioneer though
