SNAPS

Excuse my ignorance here.
Is there only one type of SNAPS PSU, or two?
Others have commented on converting them to dual-rail (as per HiCap), so I assume there's two sets of regulators in each box?
How was each regulator used in the context of an early system (i.e. before .5 mods)?
I've seen one s/h at an excellent price, and was going to buy it as a more aesthetically pleasing supply for my prefix, in place of my DIY-cap, as I want to use that in my second system.
The price means I can have it serviced / modified and still end up with a cheap PSU.
Cheers,
Andy.

There is a SNAPS2 that has two regulators inside. It was originally intended to supply a separate component via a separate socket (I'm not sure what at the moment).
Sometimes it says SNAPS2 on the back, but most times you have to remove the case and see if there are two regulators inside. Also, if there is a 5-pin DIN socket on the back, then it's already been converted.
I prefer a dual-rail SNAPS2 over the old Flat-Cap. The new Flat-Cap2 is better.

IIRC it was to power a NAXO.

I have a very old snaps.
I am not sure if it has 2 regulators but has 2 sockets for pre amp or naxo. Does this still allow dual railing and if it is from one regulator what is the benefit?

I had a Snaps around 4000 that had two regulators. As originally supplied, one fed socket four, one fed socket two. That way you could send power to your 32 and your Naxo. I think they are all like this, as the Naxo has been available since 1977.
However, you can rewire this so that instead of supplying two sockets with single 24V rails, you can supply a single (5 pin) socket with two 24V rails, like a flatcap with a larger coil, or a hicap with a smaller one.

My offer has been accepted, and it's a later one with green LED as a opposed to red, so if I'm luck it can be converted to 'mini HiCap'.
Bit of a bargain @ £70
Andy.

I have an old 42 and SNAPS lying unused at the moment and wondered if the SNAPS would power both the pre and a headline.
The SNAPS has definitely not been modded in any way so is not dual railed.
Appreciate any thoughts. Might help me get that second system up and running with headphones.
Thanks,
Calum

Calum,
Yes you can. You will have to do a mod for connecting the SNAPS to Headline:
You have to buy a SLIC, it's the cable. But this cable has a 5 pin Din, you will have to ask for a 4 pins Din. This cable is made to connect a Hicap to the headline, but it uses only one rail of the Hicap.
Mike,
I agree with you, the SNAPS is one of the best kept secrets in Naim products.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have a word with my dealer and dem the headline and see if I can get this up and running.
