Tangerine Dream - 'Thief'

Posted by: J.N. on 19 November 2003

So there I was; watching this strange film with James Caan on the telly last night and thinking the sound track was rather splendid.

"Sounds like Tangerine Dream" I thought.

Then the penny dropped - it was from 'Thief' the title of the film. I didn't know it was a film sound track, though I love it, and a lot of other TD stuff.

I'm having an earful of 'Cyclone' at the moment. Any other TD fans out there?

Me too!

The first album ' Electronic Meditation' is great, especially as Conrad Schintzler is on it.

Phaedra and Cyclone aretop,

Another classic soundtrack was 'Wages of Fear'

It is said that if William Friedlin had heard tham first, it would be TE on The Exorcist rather than Mike Oldfield.

I have most of TE's album, majority on vinyl

The last item I got a live DVD by them.

........Tangerine Dream.....there's a BAND!.
i have a fair bit of them on vinyl including a boxed set (VIRGIN) pressed by Nimbus records.
my favourite has to be TANGRAM.
David what is the DVD called?.
have gotten into this DVD malarkey ostensibly to keep my daughter's appetite for Disney et al films; VHS videos being far too flimsy for her use .she tends to watch one film on repeat for mabye a week at a time!.

Might be controversial here, but my favourite by a long way is Ricochet. The ever changing sequencer lines are enthralling and the recording is very good. Anything later than that doesnt grab me the same way although the earlier stuff is good. I'd love to hear more live recordings from about 1975.

Currently really enjoying the box set of live performances 74-76, Bootleg Series Vol 1, 5 concerts, 7 discs!!!. Audience recordings or taped from radio, quality variable but not that bad at all, the Albert Hall gig is superb.Mixed by Froese but thankfully not "tangentised" as has been done to many releases. All very different as it was the time when all concerts were improvised and when they were very loud, as i remember from Birmingham Town Hall and Coventry Cathedral. If you are a fan of Richochet then you will recognise the gigs it was taken from as the box includes Fairfield Hall, Croyden which forms a major part of the album, begs the question though where are the original recordings used for the album and could they not have been used.
Recently bought re-issues of the pre-Phaedra albums, but was dissappointed in quality of sound on some, worse than the previous re-masters!!!.
Faves include
Alpha Centauri, Zeit, Atem, Phaedra, Rubycon, Richochet and Tangram. Lost interst in 80-90's Dream, to formulaic. One or two new releases are more interesting.

Forgot, good web site for those interested in live Dream, http://www.blackaxis.co.uk/tdtree/tt01.htm
Tangerine Tree, the gigs that make up the box set came from them, loads of other gigs as well.

Happy listening

TD are indded fab. I must have 15+ of their albums. I actually don't like their very early stuff (first 2-3 albums) but Phaedra onwards for me, all are great (except Tyger which sucks). Great ones for me are Phaedra, Stratosphere, Tangram, Hyperborea, White Eagle, Exit, Poland, Richocet, Le Park, Exit, Rubycon, Livemiles, Underwater Sunlight. Ok I'll stop there but there are others!

But I haven't got Theif!..yet

However i have to agree that some of their more modern stuff is a bit shite. I got "Great Walls of China" recently and its quite boring in places.

TOKSIK,

The DVD is :
Tangerine Dream - The Video Dream mixes

Let us not forget all the solo releases, Schroder, Froese, etc.

Was Klaus Schultze ever connected ? I can't remember, but he has some good releases.

I don't anybody will stand up for the recent years TD, it has been v. dull and samey. Mid period and early period and very early period are the places to go.

Never managed to get into Tangerine Dream. I bought Richocet and thought it was great, so I bought a 'Collection' 2 album thing as a means to direct me to future purchases. However this is so bad with no real redeeming features, that I haven't even contemplated a TD purchase since (15 years).

So what are the albums with tunes??

David,

I believe he was on the first one ("Electronic Meditation") before going to Ash Ra Tempel. I've only got his first solo ("Irrlicht")
which is quite good - got any recommendations from his later stuff?

Spot on.

Body Love Vol 1 (actually the soundtrack to a porno flick) is quite good as are Mirage and X from the late 70's. Went downhill after that really.

Tangerine Dream have always been one of my favourites and were phenomenal live in the 80's. Fortunate to see them at Manchester Apollo when the protective curtain came down for the first time in about 8 years.

Thief is an LP I bought that does not stand up on it 's own. Music much better in context of the film.]

I have got Body Love i & II, Live, Timewinds, Cyborg, Trancefer, Mirage and a few other I can't remember.

He follows the usual pattern of long atmospheric pieces, almost modern classic usually a side long each.

The first TD album had a real nucleus of electronic talent didn't it!

TD were at their best while Peter Baumann was on board. His first solo album, Romance 76, is very good, but after that his output gets too poppy. What I've heard of the Repeat Repeat albun he did with Robert Palmer really does suck.

Sorcerer

A really good album, great soundtrack and works as a Dream album in its own right. Would love to hear the original recording though. TD produced it as a continous 90+ min piece of work for Friedkin, without seeing any of the film!!!, Friedkin was knocked out on how it fitted so well with his film. It was then "edited" by the studio down to the 40 mins or so. Maybe oneday it will see the light of day in its original state.
Also hoping that TD will release the complete "Oedipus Tyrannus" soundtrack, done for Keith Michel stage production at Chichester Festival ?72/73, TD performed at first night. Remember Peel on Top Gear playing it all, only one section has so far been released, on a virgin sampler"v" back in 70's and on TD cd " Antique Dreams" which i have been trying to get with little success.
