My First Naim

Posted by: Tango on 03 August 2002

I've never heard the Naim sound before but I'm having a Naim system installed at the end of the month. Components are: Pre amp 72, Power amp 140, CD3.5 and SBL speakers. All the components are about 3 years old. Anyone experienced with this setup? I may have another £400 to £600 available when I flog my old system shortly. Any suggestion as to best use of this sum to upgrade the aforesaid system?

Assuming you have an adequate support oh errr didn't mean to get personal I meant equipment support...oops not equipment in that sense, hi fi support is a better term!
Something to place all your goodies onto, then go for the power supplies young jedi.
A second hand flat cap for the 3.5...with a black snaic of course; and a second hand hi cap for the 72 and with a black snaic.
Believe me with those wee power supply puppies your be smiling so hard you could do ads for toothpaste.
So go for the 3.5 flatcap(hicap if you really want to go for it) and hicap the 72......it'll rock your socks.
Sorry about talking about your support and equipment and black snaics.....this ain't the right forum for that! big grin

Mr Tango

I have a CD3.5 / 32.5 (same as a 72) / 250/ SBL
system in my dining room.

The best thing you can do is buy a s/h Hicap for the CD3.5. That will get you a big improvement.

Buy an old one for about £250 and spend £130 by having it serviced by Naim, it will then be the same as a brand new one for half price.

If you have a bit of money left over, stick another Hicap on the 72. This what I have done and it sounds great.I have two Hicaps and they really improved the sound.

The 140 is fine for SBL's, I ran with a 140 for several years. The SBL's contrary to popular belief, can be experimented with by positioning them in and out from a wall as well as toe ing in.

You have the makings of a good system.

Hi Tango,

welcome. I simply second the previous suggestions: try to get Hi-Caps for the 72 and the 3.5. Two of them will fit on one shelf. Do you mind if I ask mr Parry one question on your thread?

Hi Mick,

I'm thinking of working on my second system - which is in the living / dining room. So one has to be be able to conduct some sort of conversation over the music. I couldn't do that with the main system (CDX / 102 / 180 / PSUs / Keilidhs): the music is too powerful. You turn it on or you turn it off. So how does that work with your diningroom system? I know, you can just turn it down, but 32.5 and 250 look to me as a rather powerful presence, that won't let itself be veiled. So I'm thinking 92 / 90 perhaps. Sorry, no real question. Any thoughts?

Pardon my interruption on the question to Mr Parry but I seem to remember from the distant past that someone (possibly Linn ?) judged/promoted the quality of a system by being able to hold a conversation while the music played, yet losing neither the music, nor the conversation. Anyone else remember this, or was it just bulldust ?

Team

Sounds good to me.

Herme et al

I have no problem with my system at all since I replaced the Saras with SBL's. The Saras came across as boomy whereas the SBL's are much more controlled.

It sounds good loud and also at low levels as well.

We often use it as background music when eating and it sounds great.

BTW, it also sounded fine when the power amp was a 140 as the system by its very nature is mainly played at 6.30/7.00 o clock.

Hope its the answer you wanted.

Regards
