Densen demagic disc with computers

Posted by: Alan Paterson on 01 September 2006

I have this disc and had always thought the difference it made when ran through the hifi very subtle (sometimes i wasn't sure it did much at all). I have a mac mini connected via a russ andrews mini jack-mini jack to a sonic impact T-amp which is connected to a pair of kef Q1 speakers via dnm reson cable (perfect cable for the T-amp due to the spring clips as i have the first version).
The densen disc has finally proved it's worth here. An increase in resolution and dynamics. I have put the disc into my i tunes and played it through the speakers. I listened to a track, played the densen noise (it is like a torture device the sound on the disc) and then played the track again.
If you have the cd (or similar demagnetising discs) then try it on your computer and let me know how you get on.

Do i take it this is not the great revelation i hoped for?

Have you thought of recording it into i-tunes and feeding it to your i-pod?

Hi Alan

I have the Densen Cd and have run it on both my computer and hi-fi. In Both I have to say there is a definite improvement immediately - sounds cleaner is the way I would describe it. Torturous to listen to though...I shut the door, make a drink and then put favourite track on and enjoy. The noise of the Densen track probably manages to dislodge any ear wax...so cleaner all round!!

Two words:

Blind Test

Have your partner either play or not play the disk while you're out but due to arrive shortly. Decide if it was played, write it down and don't discuss. Again. Decide again.
Do this at least 6 times, have your partner "randomize" whether it is played or not but distribute the trials equally. More trials will give a higher confidence result.
No cheating.
Then compare your notes with your partner's and see if you can really tell.

Don't believe anyone on this forum, find out for yourself.

Then report back.

I agree.
Alan agrees...'The densen disc has finally proved it's worth here. An increase in resolution and dynamics. '

As regards blind testing, whilst can be a fun and interesting/torturous exercise I think there are too many variables to make an objective assessment (is there such a thing?)... and as the Densen DeMagic cleans the signal path of magnetism it would take a certain amount of time for this to build up again before using the cd for comparison.

To me it makes a worthy difference to spin the disc once a week. If it works for you Alan, that's good enough.

Regards Phil.

Use it if it somehow enhances your music listening experience.
I was given one of these and can't see how I'd spend a second of my precious listening time with this thing making those horrible sounds on my kit.
I don't subscribe to the "built up magnetism" notion, it just doesn't make sense to me given that the overall average of audio programs is going to be "0" -- the constant positive and negative currents and voltages, resulting in the inward and outward excursions of your loudspeakers ultimately cancel. Where is the built-up magnetism?
You might find that playing Led Zep 4 at loud levels while you're not in the room would give you the same results as your Densen disk by warming up the amp. The bias point for the transistors will shift to some degree as their operating temperature increases and this may result in more pleasing sonics.
My particular fetish is leaving my kit on all the time. I don't have any evidence that it makes it sound better but I feel good about it being on and that makes it a better listening experience for me.
We all are in love with our kit and want to have our own recipe to make it sound best. Mine is 24/7 power on, maybe yours is the Densen disk. Others have special cables, stands, etc. that enhance their love -- all nearly impossible to prove that they improve the sound but they believe in them. Hard to dispute if they feel like it is best.
Neither one of us will be able to "prove" our method is best but we'll eat up internet bandwidth talking about it for sure!
Enjoy!
