A question to music lovers

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 04 April 2009

Hi,

I once posted this question to Stereophile, to which I was subscribed as a gift from my wife. They never replied. I pose it now to you.

If you could have any given number of players, always the same, playing the same piece of music in your living room as soon as you want to hear it, always the same, always identically, same speed same everything - would you want it?

Regards
Massimo

No, my dogs aren't great with strangers in the house...and the wife and I are quite antisocial.

Is this a variation of Groundhog Day? Sounds like living hell.

On the other hand if one was a scantily dressed Norah Jones look alike I might be interested Smile

No, it's obviously (?) another way to describe our customary relationship with records.

No, - and this one of the reasons, why I collect multiple recordings of the same work.

I did pay to have it.

Isn't that what CDs are for?

Interesting and very good question, Massimo, can't remember ever hearing it before.

Okay, I wouldn't mind having Jimi Hendrix (with the Experience) visiting me from time to time to play the same long version of "Voodoo Chile". Or Eva Cssidy doing "Live at Blues Alley" over and over again. Or a couple of visits by Ben Webster and friends...

But I can't, so that's why we have records and HiFi's!

I can have New Order in my music room playing live? This must be a rhetorical question! Winker

Sounds like living hell! The beauty of music is that there will always be something new to excite your senses. By all means revisit but you can never hear it just as you did the very first time.

Sometimes I spend ages trying to find 'the right album' to suit my mood/ time of day/ any other notion affecting me at that moment. Occasionally my quest ends in abandonment - nothing gets selected & nothing gets played.

I'm okay with that.

But what drives it is the old concept of variety is the spice of life.

There are many pieces I would dearly love to hear in my living room with friends but truthfully, I would only want it once for each piece. That's where the special value would come from. Each time it would be performed again would diminish and dilute the special treat enjoyed first time round.

Hope that makes some sense and partly answers your question.
