LP12, please help

Hei, I am looking forward to buy a LP12. My retailer told me the turntable will sound better in afromosia than black, rosenut etc. Now I have the question if you have experiences that this is so.
Please help...

Hi Gram
Interesting comments indeed from your dealer. I have had a black LP12 and now have an Afromosia one and cannot say that the sound is much different due to the finish. Far more difference comes from power supply, arm, cartridge and most of all - set up.
Just make sure that, whatever colour you end up choosing is well, the deck is well set up.

ps. you will not regret getting an LP12, they are great!

I bought my LP-12 way back when rosewood plinths were available. The dealer insisted that rosewood sounded slightly better than the other woods. He admitted that the American Linn distributor thought he was nuts.

Take a pair of speakers and make half a dozen different cabinets out of differing materials and they will all sound different. You could therefor apply the same logic to TT plinths.
However, I think it extremely unlikely that any consistent opinions could be applied in this case, (especialy when dealing with s/h kit). Differences in set up and the condition of arm, bearing, motor etc are far more relevant.
The only thing to be aware of is that many Afromosia plinths may not have any corner bracing. This is worthwhile but is VERY easy to add if the plinth is unbraced.
LP12's are an absolute no risk purchase nowadays. As long as you dont buy a dog you will not lose out if you dont like it and decide to re-sell.
Paul.

The nice thing about an old Afrormosia plinth is that it ages so well. It starts bright orange and becomes 'antique' walnut given a couple of decades of exposure to indirect light, an occasional wax polish and a good sandpaper along the grooves.
Though the tacky smoked-plastic hat does rather let it down. This can always be replaced with a cheap-looking, clear plastic pacamac hat. Personally, I think a little mystery goes a long way with the older ladies. One should not reveal all too soon.
