New DVD5 Owner - Calibration and Settings Advice
Posted by: HRC99 on 11 January 2006
Just got my hands on a DVD5 and wondering if anyone has any pointers as to setting up the DVD5.
Running it into a Pioneer 504HDE using DVI output and a QED DVI-HDMI Connector and a Supra HDMI cable.
Also connected to an AV2 with a Coax cable.
Just looking for any advice or pointers from anyone!

What you really need is a blue (47b?) filter. The DVD5 has a whole bunch of test screens, one of which is a colour screen. The rest of the screens can be used to adjust the picture just by sight. The colour screen requires a blue filter for you to get the saturation right. You can pick up a filter from any good photography shop such as Jessops. the Naim manual states exactly which filter you need - I'm fairly sure it's a 47b but check first.

Thanks for that Frank. I've just remembered that I have got one of those filters actually. So I'll give that a whirl.
I did have a slightly odd problem too. A couple of times, my plasma would go blank as it had lost the signal from the DVD5 after about ten minutes. Switching off the player and the plasma, brings it all back to life again. Not sure if I've messed around with a setting somewhere by accident!

I believe (but am not sure) it's possible to set a timeout on the player to stop displaying when the circuits aren't in use. I could be wrong about this though so you you need to check the manual...

HRC,
If you connect to the AV2 via rca,(for surround) give the DC1 a whirl.. see if you can get one on loan from your dealer. I doubt it will go back.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear. It's during playback of a DVD that it does this! Any ideas?
Cheers
Henry

I've read a few posts on it. I'm currently using a Kimber D-60 Coaxial cable. Reckon there'd be much improvement with a DC1?

Lets just say I was using a very well known brands top of the line job. The difference wasn't small. An audition is always worthwhile. You will hear a difference, the rest is for you to decide.

Solved it. Hadn't tightened the screws properly on the DVI-HDMI connector.

Some comercial DVDs have the THX calibration routines added as part of the "Extras".
"Pirates of the Carribean" is one (Perhaps you can rent it from a local video shop)
These are useful as you can check your speaker and screen calibration.
A set of blue filter glasses is required for one of the colour tests. All in all, I found these test routines very useful.

Be careful here, as the THX optimisation sections on DVD's are specifically designed to setup your display for that specific film that they have been placed upon.
The best way to set your system up is to either use the DVD5's own test patterns, or to use DVE or the Avia test discs.
Roy.

I've been using DVE with quite a bit of success. Just need to spend a bit more time messing around!
