I am a little confused.
I bought my CDI at the end of last year and as the mechanism has been replaced it has a nextel ring in place.
My Dad has had his CDI for around 10 years and his does not have a nextel ring but still play CD's pretty well, occasionally it fails to track correctly but otherwise it is fine.
Because he does not have a nextel ring, does this mean that a mechanism replacement is immanent ?
Any input would be gratefully appreciated.
Paul.

Paul, it depends very much on how recently you had the CDi mech changed. If it takes the flat round puck, then the nextel ring really isn't an issue, as I understand it there isn't really one on it at all.
If your dads is the top hat style puck then it is likely to have the nextel ring, and it will be there, it can't 'not' be there.
Its the black ring that you can see if you put the puck in place without a cd, its just on the rim of the puc circumference. Over time it will be come worn, a good one will be solid black, a worn one will have light scratching revealing silver.
This does not mean the end of the mech, keeping it clean and using a top hat puck with two rubber rings normally puts pay to most slippage problems.
Certain disks, typically from Warner Bros have an indent towards the centre of the disk, which the puck cannot grip regardles of the condition of the ring, and in these cases a little sticky tape on the CD where the puck grips will sort the problem out.
Have fun

Garyi,
Thank you for you input. Both of the CDI's that we have, have the top hat puck mechanism.
I re-checked my Dad's CDI last night and he really does not have any nextel ring in place. There is nothing there. My mechanism was replaced when I got the CD player which was in November and has a nextel ring in very good condition.
Basically I very rarely have problem playing any kinds of CD's where as Dad occasionally does.
