The dust-off-those-old-LPs-in-the-loft vinyl revival article gets written by some bored, ill-informed hack about once a year. its becoming a staple of the Silly Season.

Come along ladies

Don't take it too seriously.

I have both, and the P3 completely blitzes the CD.
Better PRaT, far tighter bass and greater dynamic range. Can't remember the exact prices, but the difference wasn't that much. I even suspect that my old Dual probably sounds better than the Marantz.

With 1300 LPs he's obviously got a healthy (?) interest in music, or he was some sort of reviewer in a past life, but what kit does he listen to it on?

I'd love to know what newspaper and magazine reviewers use to listen to new albums when doing their reviews.

People we are weird. Havn't you got it yet? We lay awake at night worring over fuses and cable direction.

Don't even deny it.

That article was written for normal people, people who think vinyl is crap and CD is good.

Get over geek boys.

Hi folks,

since I am a professional writer (working for a business magazine) and part-time reviewer (both live and records) I want to give you an insight into our business.

Full-time reviewers most of the time do work on a midi-system. It's so much easier to check out a cd on your desk when you do not have to get up from the sofa every time you change the cds. I do even get a first impression by listening to the record on my computer. If I like it - fine. I might go home and enjoy it even more. If I do not like it, I may check it out on my main-system (all naim) if my first impression has something to do with the quality of the recording. I know that hardly anyone of my colleagues uses high-end-stuff. Most of them are happy with their Denons and so on. I still trust a lot in their verdict.

But be aware. Reviewing is a tough job. First of all, full-time reviewers do not get less than 30 cds a week. Some even each day. A good friend of mine has serious problems of stocking them, not to speak of scheduling an audition. 90 % of the stuff is mere junk and should never make it into any paper.

As to the article in the Times. Yes, this is some sort of evergreen. You can write a story like that every week. Did so myself a year ago. (The reasons are solely professional. Anyone who wants to know more about it, I am happy to inform)

Basically the story is well researched. Think of it: He does not address us anoraks, but the average reader. How would you like a story on a car which is full of technical details which are incomprehensible for the average driver? Not an engineer. Driver.

We (the anoraks) are far beyond the point to get any useful information from an article like that. I know that for sure: Whenever I write an article I talk to people who give me lots of information. I have to sort it out and throw away almost 90 % of the information given. The people I talk to MUST have the impression that I got them wrong or simplified far too much. But otherwise stories would be books and no fun to read anymore. I think the Times article is fun to read and I recognised myself more than one time. So did you.

I'd be happy to pay the postage (for the decent 10% of CDs). wink

I wonder whether a current TT e.g a rega planar 3 with an average rega cartridge is better sounding than current CDP like a marantz CD72

Got new P3 last week and it kicks the arse out of my planet(Rega CDP) and was £150 cheeper!

I think that there is a journalistic term - which I am sure Thorsten knows - for the "warm fuzzy distorted" part of the article which I think is along the lines of: 99% of readers think that already so they will read the rest of my article because they identify with me. Who cares if it's true or false?

I went to Tower Records today to pick up the new Weezer LP and got real approval from the associate that served me. This store has several thousand feet of CDs and four or five feet of LPs. I also bought the new Wilco CD and she checked to see if it was also available on vinyl yet, she was genuinely surprised to find it wasn't and her view was that "most " new releases are on vinyl too. Record companies probably need to take note...

I wear my vinyl anorak with pride - It keeps me warm and dry.

I always feel I haven't actually got the music unless it is on vinyl, and try to hunt down the black stuff.

I thnk it is gettng easier to buy vinyl again, with more and more indie rock and pop and other stuff coming out now.

So three cheers for vinyl, for the old Garrard SP25 and Metrosound amplifier, and the warm fuzzy tones.
