Most of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson stuff is HDCD as far as I remember.
Oddly, only the 60s Beach Boys albums are HDCD. The 70s (Warners) stuff is 24-bit but not HDCD. Smile (2004) is HDCD.
On the thorny topic of Joni Mitchell, I took advantage of a few trips to the USA to buy most of the 70s JM CDs on HDCD (with correct logo). The silver stickered ones released in the UK were a big con. The situation was supposed to be rectified with newly remastered editions this year, but these now seem to have been put back indefinitely.
All the Grateful Dead 60s & 70s albums were released on HDCD in beautiful sleeves, but not many left now!
As far as Linn goes, NOT all Linn CDs are HDCD...
Stephen Stills 1st solo and the Manassas album, on Atlantic, are also HDCD and sound superb.

That manassas album is one I must stick into the great albums thread! I loved it when it first came out on vinyl (still have my original copy) and the HDCD version is sonicly and musically right up at the top of the heap.

Grab Anthem of the Sun while you still can - it's a superb package and sounds better than the original vinyl. It is completely re-mastered by Phil Lesh from the original tapes and there's no mucking about - the goal was simply to get the best possible sound. If only all reissued CDs were produced with this degree of care.

I followed your orders to the letter! Straight on to Amazon. I now have it playing and it sounds tremendous - much better than my admittedly hazy (
) memories of the original vinyl release. An extraordinary piece of work in fact.

Hi Chris
Really glad you're enjoying it - Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia tried a remix in 1972, but it didn't really work IMO, the early CDs were done from that remix. However, this HDCD is very different, it was back to the original and pull out all the stops to get the best sound they (Phil and his friends) could.
Anthem of the Sun is a remarkable album and this re-master shows what can be done if somebody cares.

Two CDs not marked HDCD but register hdcd on my CD5x are...
The wonderful LOVE with Arthur Lee - The Forever Changes Concert. This is an excellent live recording, capturing the warmth and joy of a special night on 15th Jan 2003. I prefer this recording to the 60's re-released version because the musicianship is of a higher quality, I feel. I bought the DVD as well, to make up for not seeing the concert. Really pleased I saw the Shepherds Bush Gig the following year I think and now Arthur has sadly departed of course.
The second Cd is a blistering Richard Thompson Band LIVE! - Semi-Detached Mock Tudor. These were US gigs recorded in Nov 1999 and I purchased this a few years ago at RT's Solo concert at Tunbridge Wells (excellent venue). The studio version Mock Tudor is very good, but RT & the band really stretch out here. The centrepiece is Hard on Me where Richard's playing is so inventive you can barely beleive it's one guitarist. The Roundhouse gig in October is recommended to any old fans or those who like to see quality axe men.

Hi Munch,
Is it as good as "Unplugged"? Got that in the car - love it.

Only the USA Jonis were HDCD, all the others aren't. All the albums were supposed to be reissued here again this year, but seem to have been shelved. You can still get the HDCDs from amazon.com, but UK Customs are getting to be a pain. They are certainly better than the non-HDCD version.

You guys talking of HDCD. What is SACD then? Explanation please for a oldie brain.

I agree with Rupert Bear. HMRC have woken up to Amazon.com. My last 3 orders have been clobbered for import duty and VAT.

hdcd = "enhanced" cd. involves a more complex, but "redbook" digital file, w/ special coding that can only be read by certain apparati. most naim cdp's have the hdcd coding, but apparently bcs. those in surrey believe it's a better cd sound.
sacd = super audio cd. creature of sony, who licenses all the hardware and software and makes a lot of the palyers. completely different digital file than redbook cd, much higher bit rate, more data encoded directly, less "aliasing," etc. provides for more detail and frequency extremes than redbook due to more encoded data. "new" sacd recordings usually done in what's called "direct stream digital," or "dsd." no analog stage. must have a special player; naim does not make any. many sacd recordings are done in 5-channel, for multichannel playback. however, most "sacd's" (look the same as a cd) include a redbook file, of the same recording, so they can be played on a cdp.

ryan_d was worried about me referencing Joni Mitchell and Neal Young in the same post as the BeeGees.
I was just trying to show that artists from GB were also recorded in hdcd format, not just brilliant trend setting Canadian artists! This was an attempt at cross-Atlantic bonding gone sadly wrong.
Now I feel that I must defend the BeeGees...
By the way, just to complete the disconnect, Chris Issacs has a greatest hits collection out in hdcd and both the sound quality and the music are worth a listen.

The Travelling Wilburys latest re release is HDCD although there is absolutley no mention of this on the case. Only found out when the CDX told me.
John
Sounds good though

The first disc I played on my newly-reconstructed system was Big Bill Morganfield's "Rising Son" on Blind Pig and that lit the HDCD light. I have several blues albums on Evidence that are encoded too.

Yes it definitely sounds better than the original release but who knows whether that's because of the remastering or the hdcd?

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road (not the remaster, which is inferior).
Incidentally, I hear a clear difference with HDCD.
Mike
Sorry about delayed response. No, my version is plain old UK version and always lights up hdcd and sounds like it too.
The new Nick Lowe album "At My Age" is also hdcd.
Mike
Didn't think that there was a version of Car as a HDCd. My CDS2 doesn't show any of the copies I have are HDCD and I have an original US release signed by her, original UK version that someone gave me and the latest remaster version. Agreed the remaster isn't that good I struggle to listen to it. Is your version Japanese?
As for good quality hdcd discs try Joni Mitchell- Blue
