My son is pestering me to download either Kazaa or Kazaa Lite.
Is anyone using either and if so which would be the best?
Also I have heard that Kazaa includes spyware - is this correct and if so is it a problem?
cheers

Kazaa lite is obviously theoretically the one to go for [i.e spyware is removed], but I am still awaiting some confirmation as to use & overall safety - there have been a few horror stories here, and I'm still a bit scared. Any contributions by continuing users would be appreciated. Are nasties obvious if you're sensible [i.e. scanning etc]? This has come up a few times, but I've not been able to make up my mind.

Hi. I have used Kazaa about 2 years. There is now a new version out( not the lite ) which they claim is free of the spyware. Kazaa Lite is also without the spyware. I only use the pc where I have kazaa for surfing and downloading stuff. I have been told that there are different spyware, some not so harmful but some being really bad. I have no experience from Kazaa Lite but have read it is ok.

I use kazaa. No problems aprt from the pop ups which are irritating. But with 5-10 million people on line at once, if you want music or movies, chances are you'll find it.

There is also some automatic scanning for viruses in Kazaa. Go for Kazaa Lite, it's great being able to check out a lot of music before buying and so on.

Alex. What is this Adaware, does it remove the spyware? Do you have to buy it or can you download it for free? Also, if you have installed Kazaa once and then unistall it some spyware stays hidden in your pc, very hard to find and remove. Panicware stops most pop ups, but there are new ones that it doesn't stop.

Got to agree with Alex on this one, as I am using exactly the same software combination.
Add ZoneAlarm or some other firewall, and a decent anti-virus package and Kazaa is perfectly safe.
Bjorne, yes adaware does remove any spyware left on your PC. If you are using Kazaa it will automatically re-install the spyware every time you run it. If you uninstall Kazaa, then run adaware it will remove any spyware left behind. Sorry but I can't remember the URL for downloading it though.
One other plus for Kazaa Lite is that it has a better search facility, and the ability to boost your participation rating.

Mark me down as another Kazaa Lite (+Ad-aware/Zone Alarm/AVG virus software) user. Been using it since Audiogalaxy went legit, and downloaded about 10 gig of stuff. Never had a virus, however the other day I downloaded Matrix Reloaded, and it turned out to be Almost Famous.

Mekon. People that change the name of movies at Kazaa has become a big problem lately. Before you could start to watch the movie before the download was completed, finding out if it was the one you wanted. This doesn't seem to be possible anymore.

I've also been a Kazaa Lite user without any problems, although I wouldn't do anything on a machine I use for work that isn't work.

In terms of access security to your computer Kazaa (or KazaaLite) is perfectly safe to use as long as :
1) You have a properly configured firewall.
2) You only allow sharing on the Kazaa shared folder.
Added to this I always make sure that my virus scan software is up to date, and scan every file before opening it.
Problems are only going to occur if you don't follow this simple procedure.
Simon
PS shouldn't this be in the padded cell ?

If Kazaa scares you, why not try WinMX ?
I have had a degree of success d/l pop videos etc. from it.
It doesn't come with the excess baggage that Kazaa has.

If you're this paranoid about losing data or getting viruses ( the latter are generally avoidable with software anyway!) then can I suggest pen and paper and a fireproof safe!
Hard disks are not entirely reliable hence the manufacturers decisions to shorten standard drives warranties to 1 year from 3!
Spyware is irrelevant anyway with kazaa lite. Have you tried IRC?
