How do you listen to music?

Posted by: Noopz on 19 November 2007

As the questions says really:

I think most people here do the first. I'm guilty of the second- right now i'm listening whilst typing this on my laptop.

I find it hard to concentrate on just listening to music- there are only a few albums I can do that to. What's more is that the room has to be dark!

How do you do yours?

I don't always read when I'm listening to music, but I always listen to music when I'm reading.

Point taken! I am sorry but i'm sure i could disagree with that on four days of the month!

But i'll tell you what, you carry on sitting there in your favourite armchair (with remote control in hand) enjoying your emmersive listening experience, and i'll go to the fridge and pour you a cold beer ; )

Not me! I'm all vinyl and NAC72. No remote controls here!

The beer sounds good, though!

That made me smile! Thanks Mark and Nymph!

I reckon we all listen to each piece of music, with its individual style, quite differently. At a Party I listen the the Music and Dance, ... , and at a Funeral I listen quite differently!

My main system is in a dedicated room so listening to that demands full on attention, usually late at night with the lights out (for CD) or seriously dimmed (for vinyl - I need an inkling of where the tonearm lever is!).
However I love background (or louder) music too. I hate to sit in the house in silence, though the sound of silence in nature can be glorious.

At the moment - because I'm studying for a diploma in archeology - I often HAVE to read while I listen to music. It p!sses me off though, I miss just sitting and listening of an evening.

I go through phases where I listen to lots of new recordings, and then "comfort" phases when I stick to a handful of favourites. The "comfort music" goes through phases too: at the moment it's Parsifal, but I tend to turn to certain of Beethoven's works for solace too; not the Hammerklavier, obviously! I often listen to quite religious works for comfort - e.g. the St Matthew Passion and Parsifal - even though I'm completely atheist. How strange is that?!

System - a wonderful pre-amp and monoblocs made by someone whose name I durst not mention, with Vienna Acoustics Haydns. Source is a PC.
