Best NAS with gapless AIFF support

Posted by: MontyMusic on 21 November 2010

Morning All,

I've been looking at getting into streaming for sometime but am still very confused as to which NAS I should buy.

I almost bought a Netgear ReadyNas Duo but found out it didn't support AIFF !!

I have a PC and a MAC but really want to stick with the MAC for ripping duty as the family use the PC.... The NAS would be plugged into my Time Capsule network

I think I'd need 4TB disc space to get all my CD's on and leave enough room for the next couple of years.

I want to use AIFF so I can drag some music for use on my iPod without the need for converting.

I'll use XLD for ripping (unless there is a better Mac alternative?).

I aspire to trade in my CDX2 for an NDX if it does the business in an audition !

Can anyone suggest a quality NAS for my needs?

If it helps, I'll be ripping direct to the iTunes music folder from XLD and streaming from this. I think I'm right in saying the NDX can stream from this.

Am I wrong about the readynas and AIFF?

Anyone with any ideas?

If Twonky supports AIFF (which I believe it does), and, given that gapless AIFF support lies within the player's capabilities (in the case of the NDX, yes), then all you need to do is install Twonky on the ReadyNAS.

Thanks. Would I need Twonky if the NDX is reading from the iTunes folder situated on the ReadyNas?

I should get a NAS that can dish up UPNP and an Itunes service such as QNAP.

If you intend to use it on the desktop as basically a share drive then thats fine but it will depend on if the NDX will read AIFF, ny understanding was that uniti et all could not so naim will have had to introduce some new software to allow this.

One other thing. In my experience many thousands of AIFF files really seriously bogs itunes down to make it nearly unusable. Consider alternatives.

Thanks. The blurb on Naims main site says NDX does support AIFF so should be no problem.

The iTunes issue you describe is a worry. There isn't much alternative though is there unless I go for FLAC but this won't work in iTunes.....

I have a ReadyNAS duo with 598Gb of mostly AIFF files. No issues running iTunes or streaming via an Airport Extreme.

I agree, right at the minute there is a real issue between a happy partnership of all these products and to that end I have no answer for you.

Why is itunes so important in your set up?

I like the interface and it's easy to drag music to my iPod playlist.

I do like dbPoweramp and foobar but I do really want to stick with a mac.

I've tried songbird on my Mac but it doesn't seem to work as well as iTunes as it keeps loosing my iTunes folder on my current Time Capsule....

There is the ReadyNas Ultra 2 as a higher performance option too:

Napster, things may well have progressed it was about a year ago when I tried with lots of AIFF and it was real sluggish.

If this is the case then I would suggest to the OP that a QNAP TS410 is in order with 4 1.5tb drives giving 4.6TB of usable data with single drive failure (this would not be considered a back up solution in that if you delete a folder then its gone!)

This then mounts at start up for the mac. In terms of itunes using it as the volume then it should be fine.

The nas can then broadcast the folder of music as UPNP. This is perfectly doable.

Fair play. I've never used a QNAP so I can't comment on them.

I think you really have to decide before you go down a route as to what format / playback system you really want. Altering after you have ripped 1000+ CD's becomes a bit of a ball ache.

Thanks. Is a single drive failure classed as Raid5?

Yup.

I think it has 6 as well but obviously you loose space as a result.
