Triumph 1500-15yrs one careful owner, then one stupid student.
Triumph Stag MkII 30k never blew up, just rusted.
MGBGT rubber bumper. Like driving a tractor.
Toyota MR2 Mk I, still one of the best I have ever owned or driven.
Renault Clio 1.4. 'Common sense' choice. Crap
Fiat Punto GT turbo. Straight lines whippee! Bends-aargh.
Alfa Romeo 145 cloverleaf. Fragile, fun.
Mazda MX-5 1.8 Mk2. Always a joy. Gave me backache.
Alfa 147 2.0 Selespeed. Swift, sensible, engine by genius, electrics by an idiot. Sell it soon I think.
Caterham SV Roadpsort 1.6K. Weekend car self-built in garage. Driving re-discovered.

I'd be afraid to own a copy of any more than a handful of the cars on either of your lists for fear they'd put me in the poorhouse.

I've always especially associated the "f*ck reliability, I'll fix it myself" attitude with UK auto enthusiasts. (An attitude I admire from afar, btw.)

Indeed I've owned some right shite in my time. The Mini I owned needed a new engine within a fortnight of purchase - I bought a replacement engine from a scrappie for £25, rolled the mini onto an old mattress, extracted and replaced the engine with the help of a couple of friends and had the car back on the road by the afternoon! Those were the days. Now I look under the bonnet of my VTEC Honda and I'm lucky if I can fill the washers...

Funny that - approx 5 years ago I had a similar experience at a local BMW dealership - ok, so I was wearing a worn pair of jeans and my beat-up leather jacket. They were not interested in me. I bought an XJR and returned one week later - funnily enough despite wearing the same clothes that time they were fawning all over me.

In the UK the age of a car can be determined by certain letter combinations (unless of course personalised plates are being used).

The Rally Cars have been the real killers as far as cost is concerned, £1000 per month in a bad year! The main reason for owning so many unreliable cars is that I like to drive something "interesting" and this usually seems to equate to unreliable. I can't be bothered with the hassle at the moment so I have new cars (apart from the rally car) and am a member of the Classic Car Club in Edinburgh (See Top Cat's posting near the start of this thread).

Maybe too boring given the number of sports cars listed but.....

2003 VW Golf Mk4 GT Tdi 150bhp (total hoot, loads of torque, traction control etc and 50+ mpg)

2002 Fiat Punto Sport (Wife's car - nuff said !)

ahh, 976MAE, my first car at 17. Floor starter. £25 well spent. I hope it is still on the road somewhere.....

Scrapped after losing rear axle on the M58...luckily it could only top out at 60.

Fiat 500

Spent summer at uni rebuilding this with friend. Test drive in snow. Got crushed by a bread van - had to be cut out by firemen. Could filt 6 foot 6 Geordies in with ease. Spent many a happy hour fondling peoples legs in back seat trying to find heater control.

Hillman Avenger

Auto. Nice car. Dull.

Out of all of these cars, the worst was the Vectra. I hated the thing, it was uncomfortable, thirsty and worst of all red! The MR2 was most fun to drive, but bad for the back. I'd say that out of all, the Volkswagen Golf is the best all-rounder I have had.

Stephen, I'm impressed - 1958 Austin seven (Mini) - you managed to get one before they were launched in 1959!
