Tape noise - Shelby Lynne, Just a Little Lovin'

Posted by: Happy Listener on 15 September 2009

Just seen in HiFi+ that this album was up for a recording quality award (lost out to Raconteurs)and the first (title) track was cited by the mag as very good quality.

Via a 555, the opening track has a high level of what I can only believe to be tape hiss plus there is some pull through (i.e. some reflection of the recording at the start of some of the tracks).

Overall, it's very good - but do others have the same experience of this CD?

I don't know the record, but just listened to it.

Some words from analogue-loving SL herself on the recording of the album, on 2" tape:

I saw her on a local talk show public TV. She told about the album and said it was a tribute to Dusty not exact copy. Also said she didn't like the sound thru digital separating the band. Her company let her use tape and band in one room and really loved the experience.

Engineers wanted to put it thru digital to clean it up and she said "NO, that sound and bleed thru is REAL, I want that." I can imagine this small blonde in booth with bigger and older sound engineers demanding her way. Set them back on their heels. I say go for it, she's the artist, the company said do what you want on the next album and she did. I have it on vinyl I just love it, lights low, silky smooth all the way thru.

I'll be looking for her other works but not right now, I dare not go into Amoeba at this point in time.

Doesn't she use a vocoder to process her voice? She never sounds natural to me. Might be fun for the weekend, but leaves something to be desired. Have you heard her kid sister Allison Moorer? She sounds much better, looks better, too.

Yes, Have found exactly the same on Cd played through a CDX2. It's on vinyl aswell I think, wonder if this is the same and if maybe the vinyl copy was the reason for the nomination in recording quality award?
