We watched The Red Violin last nite - quite good - highly recommnedend.

The sound is good too. Lots of strings (obviously) and choral.

Any other movies out there work a look?

I'm shocked it took you this long to watch the Red Violin.

The three colors trilogy "Blue", "White" and "Red" by Krystof Kieslowski(sp?) is fantastic. Nice scores, great story and cinematography.

That's not enough.
What didn't you like about it?
Not a wind up. As a pedestrian movie goer, I'm truly interested.

I think you're being a little harsh. Sure the Red Violin wasn't stellar, but it wasn't terrible either. Sadly, it's probably the closest many people get to experiencing truly artistic films.

As I'm sure you realize, Vuk, most people don't want to their entertainment to be artistically challenging; they just want to be entertained. It's supposed to be a pleasant diversion from the ordinary, and not a mind expanding experience. I experience the repercussions of this every day. For example, last night I had to tolerate two CDs worth of "The Hits of the 80's". eek

Surely this is all the endorsement anyone needs wink

Just playing...

The linear narrative ("and then what happened was...") is the sort of screenplay you'd expect from someone just starting to tell stories and with hardly any experience of how others have done it.

Now this is just darned interesting. One of the things I liked about the film was the non-linear development. Surely you noticed this? Its even noted prominently in the production notes in the Bonus Material section of the DVD.

And yea - its not the greatest film of all time or anything. We found it interesting, it engaged us and we watched all the way through.

It's interesting that you mention,

quote:
To satisfy the attention span of even the most impatient teenager, directors discard any overarching visual and emotional aesthetic in favour of a series of attention grabbing quickies

When I saw The Red Violin, I was with a large group of freinds who ranged from beer swilling mulletheads to GenX intellectuals. I was surprised that everyone enjoyed the movie equally.

Right!
