The cost of your HiFi

Interesting question.
I haven't had to and nor would I sacrifice anything major like your suggestions for my hifi purchases. I have just sacrificed having less money invested in the stock market. In fact come to think of it that is not a sacrifice atall as since I have purchased my HiFi the stock market has plummeted.
Consequently purchasing Naim kit has saved me money...
well thats one way to justify it I suppose...

Maybe I did not come across clearly, I have no realy given anything up, but it seems some people have so much money tied up in HiFi that they must have made some sacrafices.
My next purchase of note will hopefully be about 25 years old, come from Germany and have the air cooled engine in the wrong place. I do not intend HiFi upgrades to get in the way of it.

Solved the jealous direct heirs problem by not having any - this may help to explain how we managed to get such a music centre
The other sacrificee will be the tax payers when I need rest home care - I will not have ay cash to pay for it so unless they require me to sleep on the streets the government can pay.
Or I take the Tucson solution

Hi Simon,
In the minds of some it seems I do spend alot of money on hifi. But if you take the following in mind:
(1) I am a bachelor (2) I own a little but comfortable appartement (3) I don't care about cars (4) I'm an IT nerd (5) My former employer had to buy me out with 15 monthly salaries because I became "disposable" (6) I've got myself a great new job (7) I don't have any other expensive hobbies
You can imagine I have some funds I can and will spend on hifi. All within reasonable limits, that is.
On the other hand, I like to travel and I do like to go out and have a drink, see a movie or have dinner with friends.
Music is quite important to me. Not as important as having a roof above my head and be able to feed myself decently, but for the rest...
I just have the luck to be able to do the things I like to do!
grtnx Peter

We give up nothing. We earn shed loads of cash, do not have children and have a modest mortgage. We have the holidays we want and new cars when the layer of cowshit gets too deep to be able to open the door anymore.
We also try to save for a pension and early retirement.
Incidentally we also work bloody hard, my wife probably more than me.
Well I guess you wanted honesty.

Chaps
In the last 12 months, I have bought the wife a new car, been to the carribean on a cruise, tenerife, Greece twice and South Africa is soon coming up. I have also bought a 36" TV, DVD and VCR oh and a breadmaker.
I eat out far to much, guzzle too much whiskey, so Hifi does not impact on me that much.
My major vice used to be vintage fountain pens, I have sold 40 off (which paid for 52+supercap)but still have 50 left. I sold a Juke box which paid for the CDS11, so it's all about changing money around in circles.
I also had too many chain linked gold cufflinks which I have now sold off and most of them went for £100 at a time, so money just seems to come and go with me.
I have promised myself a motorbike and fortunately I am in a position to get a 40% discount from Honda...so a fireblade is becoming a tempting proposition. Alternatively, I have always lusted for a Vincent Rapide, which I might buy.
One problem is my leathers need letting out about 4" around the waistline.
So if I flog off the rest of my pen collection, I might go for a 552, again it's rotating money in circles.
It certainly makes life interesting.
Regards
Mick

Unlike a student I once met (who paid for his LP12 by starving for six months) I put essentials such as housing, food and healthcare before non essentials. I saved my dole money for six months to pay for my LP12...

I buy HiFi for the money left over after spending on other "make your life good" things. Cars, travels, books etc. etc.
If I did not spend the left over money on HiFi, what would I then spend it on? I don't know. Same could be said about saving money on other things, like cars. A popular argument against spending crazy money on HiFi is that one could buy lots of records instead. Well, actually, there are not hundreds or thousands of records just waiting in the shops that I WANT to buy!

Well, what I mean is there is probably hundreds or thousands records out there, somewhere, that I would want to buy. If know they existed.
But how am I to know?
Radio? Here in Sweden there are four channels of public radio. One is just talk. Two is just talk and so called classical music, three is teenage pop (that was good when I was a teenager). Four is for "grownups" and sport. Actually they have one program a week, with country music, that interests me. Thats it. And the comercial stations, well you probably know how they are.
Reviews? A review can say five stars, and I think its crap.Or the other way around.
Friends? Well either they are stuck in the 1970:s (nothing wrong with that, but I already have most of the -70:s music I like) or they don't listen to music at all.
See what I mean? Yes, I would have loved spending the money used for upgrading my CDSI to CDSII on music instead, but I don't know where to find it.
