NYC Scene

Posted by: Not For Me on 20 March 2003

There seems to be something brewing in NYC - There are a load of bands coming up like The Rapture, Out Hud, The Faint etc. etc. 'Discopogo' is one of the terms used to describe the sub-genre.

It is reminiscent of the early US punk scene with Richard Hell / Television/ Suicide / NY Dolls etc. , so it is worth keeping an eye on for intersting music to come out of it.

Check out the special Jockey Slut issue out now.

ejl - I followed your lead on Calla, found some of thier tunes - The Can analogy was quite apt. "Televised" was a good track, with Jaki Leibizeit like looping lumps, sparse open production.

Genre and scene defining is so almost always musho hack wankery. However, the Out Hud album is absolutely fantastic and even in March I feel sure it will figure in my albums of the year list.

Matthew,

It is true that labelling and genre definition is the lifeblood of muso hackery, but nevertheless it does help to have a shorthand to cut to what you are on about.

A good case is going into a record shop and asking the assistant for 7 good records. You need to subdivide into genres to get to the point.

The problem is, there tends to be a desire for the press to pigeonhole bands into the new fad, even if they don't fit. The bands deny they are 'electroclash' or whatever, but the true test is where their records end up in the Record & Tape Exchange. Truth will out then.

Anywaaay, we can all just ignore that and enjoy the music, can't we ?

Excellent, you seem to have a wide varied taste in music just like me.

I really like Sahara Elektrik. I remeber buying it at Uni in 1989 after hearing it on John Peel, weirdly enough he played it again a couple of years ago on his show.

BTW - have you got the John Peel compliation on Fabric Live series, you may like it.

Dev,

I do have some of the Fabric series, like the Radioactive Man one for instance, but I didn't get the John Peel one, as I had nearly all the tracks (except the football terrace one)

I will look again and perhaps reconsider.
