wait for a new prefix

Posted by: Ulrich Hohn on 04 May 2003

My Prefix is alraedy 8 years old. In this time some was surely improved. I assigned therefore my dealer to supply
to me with a new. My dealer cannot supply, since a new is offered shortly. How long do I have to still wait?

5 days ago my dealer installed the new Prefix. It is great! More details, fewer distortions, more dynamics. I think, the new Prefix will be a fine gift for my son, too.

My new Prefix looks outwardly exactly the same as the old. My old was built in 3/1995. Whether the clear improvements were only built in recent time I cannot say.

artist, after naim changed the snaic to the black snaic, I have this done to my prefix four years ago. Naim have changed more. Even my dealer was surprised from the sound.

Any comment from NAIM on a new Prefix?

Hi Everyone,

The new Prefix came about after some extensive research into reducing the occasional susceptibility of the K Prefix to pick up RFI.

We conducted field trials in various areas known for their RFI problems (there's an earlier thread on this from a member involved in the field trial out in the US). All I can say is that it was a great success, the effects of RFI reduced by a huge margin, and the general consensus seems to be that the sound of the Prefix has improved too...

I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I don't have RFI problems at home but the sound improvement I looking forward to hearing for myself.

Richard,

Couldn't this upgrade be done by simply having the old unit serviced by Naim rather than having to buy a new one?

Robert,

yes, I believe this is possible but I'll have to double check with R&D when we're back on Tuesday.

Richard, please let us know from which serial-no. the "new model" starts!

Thanks in advance, Jun

Hi Richard, any word from R&D??

I'm getting one of my prefixes changed from an S to a K and would like it updated to current spec if possible.

Any more news from Naim as regards the Prefix since Richard Dane's posting earlier in the week?.

Sorry everyone,

yes, older Prefixes can be modified to include the RFI mods.

Only a small handful of Prefixes have so far gone out with the mods - I'll post the s/ns as soon as we've had a chance to go through the records.

I have a k-prefix/hicap linked to an SMEV/Lyra Helikon/Michell Orbe. I eliminated RFI by wrapping the earth wire(beween prefix and my 52)through a ferrite cable clamp. I have had bad experience of using these clamps on signal cables as they do seem to "slug" the sound (whilst reducing RFI)......the effect of "clamping" the earth seemed a good idea, as the earth should not be carrying any signal current...any current in the earth is likely to be (RFI)noise. In practice, this does seem to have worked.....no more RFI without compromising sound quality.

So to the point of my posting......I am very interested in any mods to my prefix that will give me better sound, but I have a concerns about changes made to reduce RFI.......maybe I am wrong here but my gut feeling(based on expereience) is that RFI-reducing measures usually do compromise the sound in other areas (though I would accept that for sufferers of extreme RFI, filters may be the lesser evil)

So, if there is better sound on offer, ignoring RFI issues......I definitely want it!

What are the costs of modding my prefix likely to be?

One further question, anyone.....my prefix has the grey captive snaic. Is changing this for the (black?) snaic a worthwhile upgrade? (the snaic from hicap to 52 is black)

I changed my 52 Burndy from grey to black last year.......I would say that this was definitely worthwhile, though quite pricey.

The original 'RFI Free Prefix' thread is here:

RFI Free Prefix Thread

As I recall, the amazing thing was that they found a way to reduce RFI and improve rather than degrade sound quality. No reason not to get an RFI-free Prefix.

The RFI mods have been applied to all Prefixes after (and including) s/n 194949.

Apart from a handful of field trial units, earlier modded Prefixes are as follows:

E - s/n 176122 & 183931
S - s/n 192450, 194119 & 194120
