Uniti too good to pass?

Posted by: JYOW on 24 June 2009

I just went to my Naim dealer and spotted the handsome Uniti which can potentially replace near everything on my rack. Its functions include:

Preamp (Replaces 202)
Poweramp (Replaces 200)
CD (Replaces CD5X)
Network Streamer (Replaces Slim Transporter)
Tuner (Replaces NAT03)
Headphone amp (Replaces Headline/NAPSC)
Single power (No need for Graham Hydra)
No Interconnect needed (Delete Hi-Line)
No Power Supply option (Delete HiCap/NAPSC)

I estimate the components it replaces cost about $15K USD, resale value hopefully $10K. The Uniti itself costs about 1/4 of the system price .

Of course I understand that the Uniti is at 5i level, but my 202/200/5X is not leaps and bounds better, and the convenience/environmentally sound/economical factor is just too good to ignore.

If Naim does not come up with a decent streamer soon, I may climb down the Naim ladder, wait and let the naim upgrade dusts settle before climbing back up. Either way Naim still wins.

Have MP3s improved that much?

No, but was Compact Cassette ever that good?

Yes

and then there was the Sony Walkman Pro - much better than MP3 IMHO.

Smile ROTF, I concur!

Just this weekend I had some friends down to stay. We were doing a late night music session and one of my friends plugged in his i-Phone to play some tracks. He thought it sounded pretty good and was telling me it was a "high quality" 320K MP3 file. Just for fun I went and dug out the same track that I had recorded from vinyl onto cassette with my Nak ZX-9.

Everyone sat there dumbfounded by how good it sounded...

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find anything by searching...
just curious, can the Uniti play hi-resolution files?

Thanks

of course it can.

Well to be more accurate, it can receive a stream with hi-res data, DAC it, then output.

The CD player cannot.

Thanks! A simple answer to a simple question!

This is not yet correct - files with a sample rate higher than 48kHz cannot be played, pending a future software release.

ooops, sorry!!!!

Strange though.

Dave is this true for streaming only? Can the UNiti accept a 24/96 file via digital input?

thanks,

Which languages are available in the setup of the uniti? ( Dutch?? )

For what its worth, the UNiti manual is at least available in Dutch, as well as French and Italian.

I haven't seen that yet. Is it somewhere online? Please send link.

No there is no Dutch manual, there is a Deutsch manual (which is German for German).

Ahhhh, those native English speakers, they speak nothing across the border Winker Big Grin

But if your interested in a Deutsch manual here it is: Deutsch

Another question:

- Does the uniti has the little (naim) hiss?

- - the uPnP software, can i use it with my itunes? Or do i need external/other software? Does naim have uPnP software which you can use?

Robbert,

No amp is silent. If it is, it is surely filtering something somehow.
