I knew the concert had been mixed by Steve Wilson for the original broadcast, which had eight of the tracks, so it is not a surprise that this is the release.
I do think it is a bit of a disappointment though, as that is a shortened set, and does not include many of the tracks like 'Sever', 'A Smart Kid', 'Dark Matter' that were performed on the last tour for the for the first time in many years.
Trying to decide whether to go and see them in Leeds. I already have tickets for Hammersmith.
I know a lot of people on the forum are fans of their recent releases, but I must admit that I don't find them as nearly enjoyable as when they were touring 'Stupid Dream' and 'Lightbulb Sun' with Chris Maitland on drums, and as a four piece.

Jamie,
I think the current live band with John Wesley (guitar/vocals) works really well. Also, I much prefer Gavin Harrison on drums, who apart from being technically better than Chris has also added an extra dimension to PT's sound. I do share your liking of 'Stupid Dream' and 'Lightbulb Sun' and hope that the new album has some of those elements included.
The venue to film the Fear of a Blank Planet repertoire for a DVD which was shot over both nights at 013 in Tilburg. The tour featured debut live performances of Stars Die, and Normal.
Dates
Oct 15 2008 TILBURG, The Netherlands : 013
Oct 16 2008 TILBURG, The Netherlands : 013
Unless recording the new album finishes earlier than expected, it looks like the DVD & possible CD might be delayed until 2010.
Here are the set lists from both nights that could be selected for the final mix. I love 'Smart Kid' and wish it was included in either gig.
October 15, Tilburg
Fear of a Blank Planet
My Ashes
Anesthetise
Sentimental
Way out of Here
Sleep Together
-short break-
Normal
Stars Die
Open Car
What Happens Now
Wedding Nails
Dark Matter
Half Light
Sever
Blackest Eyes
Encore--------------
Sleep of No Dreaming
Halo
October 16, Tilburg
Normal
Drown with me
Stars Die
Cheating the Polygraph
Anesthetize
Prodigal
Wedding Nails
-short break-
Strip the Soul / .3
Half Light
Sever
Way out of here

Thanks Denis
That does cover a more interesting set of tracks.
The Gavin Harrison/Chris Maitland debate has gone on one of the Porcupine Tree forums before. Technically Gavin Harrison is a better drummer, but there are a lot of fans who really like Chris Maitland's feel (and singing).
I love 'In Absentia' and don't think that would have had the impact with Chris Maitland, but on the other hand I think Gavin Harrison murdered 'Waiting' live on the last tour. He should read what Chris Maitland wrote about keeping it simple and letting the song stand for itself.
I have realised that the Leeds show is the day before the London show, so I won't be getting tickets for that now.

Here's part of a PT Forum members discussion with Steven Wilson at his Cardiff InStore signing earlier this week...
New album... is written. They start the recording this coming Sunday (15th March), hoping to get it finished by May, and the release is set for the end of September. It's scheduled to be a double. The first CD is one long 55 minute track ("Epic" said our man Steven). Then the 2nd CD will be a whole load of shorter tracks. "But plans can change" said Steven, so nothing is certain. I think he's going HEAVIER with this one, as there was mention of "drop B tuning" which to me sounds "interesting".

Just got my copy of the 'Ilosaarirock' release.
There are two discs sent, one in the sealed digipack cover and an additional one in a clear plastic sleeve.
Both have the same design and tracks, but the one in the digipack sleeve has been mastered without (whatever the mastering equivalent of) 'disc at once', so there are tiny gaps between each track, which is a little annoying on a live release with continuous crowd noise. It would seem this was only noticed after the pressing, packing and sealing with the covers.
It is an excellent recording, and despite my disappointment about the shortened set, it is very enjoyable. Looking forward to 'Blackest Eyes' and 'Halo'.
