Thomas Dolby Remasters

Posted by: badlyread on 11 July 2009

Just to let you know that the remasters of 'The Golden Age of Wireless' and 'The Flat Earth' are released on Monday 13th July. The GAOW is the original track listings that has, to my knowledge, never been available on CD (The Wreck of the Fairchild included). There are lots of additional tracks available on both CDs. I'm confident that Thomas will have done an excellent job behind the desk.

I have both on original vinyl and some of the 12" singles some of which have never been played (I bought 2 copies of each as I believed I would wear them out!).

No, not on vinyl I'm afraid. Don't think EMI believe Dolby has that big a following to warrant the expense.

I know little or nothing of TD other than his duet with the great late Magnus Pike - what is his best elpee; I've been told not to buy from Amazon as you get a cheap import rather than the album advertised - so I'll go elsewhere, but which elpee should I try.

The Golden Age of Wireless is the one for me ROTF.

Hi ROTF

Here is the Thomas Dolby - Press Release for...

Thomas Dolby Collector's Editions
The Golden Age Of Wireless (CD + DVD)
The Flat Earth

I have seen the feedback from disgruntled folk on the amazon site. Both CD's are available here, but no customer reviews yet.

The re-released 'GAOW' is accompanied by a DVD of the full-length 1983 live concert performance 'Live Wireless', originally available only on laser disc. This has a simple 80's synth style and early samples (i.e. Magnus) and worth it for the DVD I would say.

The Flat Earth, is a more sophisticated album and mean basslines. Musically I feel it's the better of the two releases, but I will buy both anyway, cos Thomas is the Dogs Smile

Here is some recent footage where Thomas fills in the background to some the songs that appear on both CD's. This is not aimed at these new releases but from shows a couple of years ago.

The Amazon copy has a white German video classification square on the artwork (not a sticker) but the quality of the recording is the same - very good. The Golden Age Of Wireless and The Flat Earth are both fantastic albums ROTF.

Thanks 555. Denis and Neil - I'll give GAOW and Flat Earth a go - I like what I've heard on You-Tube. Very interesting to hear him align himself with early Human League as I really liked their early stuff (some of the latter stuff was good too).

Honestly I'm not sure if I agree with remastering his back catalogue, I have two versions of GAOW and a great original copy of The Flat Earth and they all sound simply amazing on vinyl, I couldn't think they could sound any better. I really think the 80's was the pinnacle in sound engineering and mastering they got so much right back then. As apposed to today where the mix is invariably "wrong".

I imagine it's primarily for the benefit of CD users.

Might give the flat earth a punt for the extras although I already have field work (with sakamoto).

In all likelyhood there is bob hope and no hope that they will sound better than my vinyl copies which still sound utterly amazing in every way.

I have owned, listened and loved TD's Flat Earth on vinyl for many years.
Have not had or listened to GAOW though, so have just bought a vinyl copy off flea bay. Really looking forward to giving it a spin!!

Thanks for the post. I just ordered both of these from CDwow.

I loved these back in the day. Damn, I miss the eighties.

GAOW is a wonderful album that's stood the test of time.

The 80's were unsurpassed for submarine pinging noises (for which I'm a sucker): e.g. One Of Our Submarines, Kate's Ninth Wave, Das Boot soundtrack...

Hi Gary

I'm really enjoying my new copy of GAOW too.
I remember seeing TD play live in 1982 promoting that album,
& the PA was outstanding. Smile

Max,

I wonder if Thomas and the band looked similar to this picture from 1981?

Hi Denis

From what I remember yes they did, & thanks for taking the time to show me that.
Looking at the picture really takes me back, & makes me feel old!
I saw Thomas & band when they performed at the 'new' TVS television studios in Gillingham.

I recall The Golden Age of Wireless sounded much better regarding the quality recording,
compared to other records I was listening to at the time.
When I saw TGAOW performed live the PA was similarly outstanding compared to others I had heard.

Am so glad to hear about this, will acquire them both with haste.
I was just listening to The Flat Earth the other day. Some amazing bass work throughout, but my fav for bass is "Screen Kiss".
And he gets a nod from me for most creative use of typewriter sounds on "Dissidents".
Later works had him using jackhammers, etc.
There are a couple of good tracks on Astronauts and Heretics and even Weird Al did a parody of one. High compliments indeed!
