For such an unpromising place, it does seem to be abuzz with creativity.
E.g. XTC and its various spinoffs (Barry Andrews/Shriekback/Illuminati etc), Diana Dors, Julian Clary, Desmond Morris, Jasper Forde, that new book 'The case of the dog in the night-time' set in Swindon... then there's Melinda and Billie....Brunel had his design office here...
Its modern art collection is highly thought of... um,er...
Anyway, not sure Romford or Tring have been such a hotbed....
Not to mention its illustrious Forum posters (I told you not to mention...)

Electrician admits he stole from soldiers in Iraq
ELECTRICIAN Dwayne Seaton has admitted stealing from soldiers who were
away fighting in Iraq. Seaton, 34, of Speedwell Close, in Haydon Wick,
pleaded guilty to stealing
two credit cards from barracks in Hullavington and using them to pay for
goods worth more than £1,000.
He also admitted possession of cannabis and amphetamines.
Swindon magistrates heard on Monday, Seaton entered the barracks during
the summer to carry out repairs.
Jane Warren, prosecuting, said a cleaner had opened the room where
soldiers, who had been sent to the Gulf, had stored their kit.
Miss Warren said the offences only came to light when the soldiers'
relatives started receiving bills for products bought while their loved
ones were away.
Hugh Norman, defending, said some of the money had been used to pay off
drug debts.
He said: "My client says he saw the cards as a golden opportunity to pay
off debts. He has fully co-operated with the police and most of the
property has been recovered."
Seaton also asked for 17 similar charges to be taken into account.
The chairman of the bench, Giles Currie, said: "The offences are in line
with a prison sentence."

DOMESTIC violence is a sickening crime that is known to rise over
Christmas. So it is encouraging to learn that those who terrorise their
partners are being brought to book in a heightened campaign.
Part of the problem that police and prosecutors face is the victims' fear
in giving evidence against the person who has abused them. When a victim
reports a domestic crime they are now kept safe and have professionals
they can turn to for support at any time.
The days have gone when crimes at home were not taken seriously and the
impact on the whole family was not considered.
The recent conviction for murder of wife-beater Glyn Razzell has raised
the profile of domestic violence.
Quite rightly society will no longer tolerate this despicable form of
abuse.
