Happy 80th Birthday Sir Charles

Posted by: Tam on 10 November 2005

As anyone who's read many of my posts on classical music may well be aware, I'm a big fan of Sir Charles Mackerras who celebrates his 80th birthday on Thursday 17th of November with a performance of Verdi's 'Un Ballo in Maschera' at the ROH. Sadly I won't be able to attend, however, Radio 3 is thinking of us and has a week of celebrations and broadcasts planned:

This week of broadcasts culminates in a rather fine reading of Fidelio with Christine Brewer and the SCO, which was performed up here in Edinburgh last month. It was an interesting performance, not least because he adopted the practice of putting the number 3 leonora overture in between the scenes in act two and conducted it with an energy that oughtn't to be possible at that age.

Anyway, a fine way to celebrate someone who's contributed so much to the musical life of this country, I for one wish him many more years of successful music making.
