Huge rambling AV question

Posted by: Simon Perry on 31 January 2006

Hi,

I have been a devoted naimee for about 4 years, and am really happy with my existing stereo system (112/150, CDX2, B&W 805s, Rega P25, stageline). In the future I expect I will embark upon further upgrades - probably beginning with the pre and power amp. However, I am now interested in home cinema - specfically to buy a decent 42/43 inch plasma and a 5.1 system.

The layout of my lounge means that it would actually be very convenient to put the plasma on the wall in between where my speakers are already. Therefore, I am now beginning to think what was, until recently, the unthinkable, namely to integrate my two channel and home cinema set up. This then poses a series of practical problems and I'd welcome the thoughts of anyone here who has gone through a similar process.

1. This is going to cause a lot of black/silver box proliferation, how the hell do you tacke this whilst keeping the whole thing (1) neat and tify ie not mulitple racks strewn across the lounge, angering SWMBO, and (2) without sacrificing the quality of the stand that I have my naim steroe set up on (currently an ash design rack)? Current likely boxes include all of the above plus plasma media box, sky + box, games console, DVD player, AV receiver (frequently enormous great things), maybe even a DVD recorder/video

2. Should I go for Naim n-Vi, or another one box solution, or go the tried and tested yamaha /denon/ arcam separates route for the receiver and dvd player? So many options! One of the benefits of being into naim on the two channel front is that apart from the make of speakers, the decision making process is much easier.

3. Any views on compatible surround speakers for my B&W 805s? I would not be adverse to the matching centre but not interested in their huge ugly rears in that range. Considering their flat panel speakers for the rears.

AV2 seems out of the question at the moment as I don't want to constrain my 2 channel set up which will be upgraded over the next 2 years.

Any help/words of encouragement appreciated!

Err, good luck seems appropriate!

Took me months of deliberation to decide, then I met a dealer who new what he was about, and changed my mind again..

It aint easy, and you need to give yourself a budget, then allow and 150% extra as that is what you will end up spending!

A very neat solution is the NVi as this gives you everything bar speakers. (Nsat set?) and you could incorporate this with your existing kit? It would help stop the box proliferation.

Buy an n-Vi, hook it up to you screen and your unity gain AV input.
Buy a sub, centre and rears that match sonically to your B&Ws....

All you need is one lead into your 2 channel from the n-Vi, one to your display, 3 speaker cables, a sub lead and a mains socket.

Any other way of doing it will create more spaghetti, probably not sound as good, and involve more boxes.
The n-Vi works very well, I've seen it running, and as someone who's had a 5.1 system since shortly after Laserdisc started providing this, let alone DVD, I'm impressed by it. Smile

My initial approach would be to honestly review how I spend my time ie more music or movies and apply the budget accordingly. In my case this has moved me away from stereo to AV but YMMV!
It would be helpful to know what sort of budget you are working to?

Hi Josh. You make a very good point re priorities actually. My budget is about £8,000 - £9,000 for the AV stuff ie
- DVD
- surround sound receiver
- new stand(s)if I see a good solution to hold all the boxes this entails
- centre speaker and 2 rears (+sub?)
- cable
- plasma (LCD?)

I wouldn't put the sub down as a question mark...
Even with full range speakers to all channels the sub still has its' own " .1" channel to deal with, and its' ability to help out the centre and rears is also quite important.... Winker

Simon

Di you really want a Plasma/lcd?

IMHO, in AV land, sound is important but picture is everything and I'd seriously consider projector/screen.

MMMmm, but I do want to use it as a TV too, so for that reason I had ruled out a projector.

Hi Simon

I'd recommend looking at the following set up to start with:

1. TV: Pioneer 50" 6th generation plasma PDP506XDE - list is £3.8k can be had for around £3.3 if you shop around. Or go for the 42" version at around 2.3 (depending on viewing distance. Generally I'd say a 50" is the minimum size for a reasonable cinema effect.

2. DVD - Arcam FMJ DVD29 £1.6 list pre-owned at around £1. Amazing picture & pretty good sound. Or consider the DV79 which lists at £1k.

3. Receiver - Arcam AVR300 £1.3 list

4.Centre Speaker: This is the most important item in the AV speaker set up so no skimping! B&W HTM4S at £950

5. Rear speakers B&W FPM series should complement the other B&Ws nicely. Prices range from £250 - £600 each.

6. A subwoofer is essential. The B&W PV1 at around £1k is good & fairly discreet but quite expensive. Depending on budget I'd look at a REL Quake or Stampede at around £500.

7. Cables - match to existing if budget allows.

8. Stands - No ideas here other than see what the budget allows.

I would not look at projectors at this price point myself but might consider a rear projection TV though.

JAB. Great feedback - thanks. I will demo that equipment as my dealer does all of those manufacturers.

My pleasure Simon. Not sure if you place much store in reviews (I enjoy reading them but like to think & listen for myself!) there is a rather OTT review of the Arcam AVR300 here: http://www.iar-80.com/page130.html

BTW, I just saw a cute picture in todays Daily Mail of David Beckham's new AV kit being delivered - a huge mound of boxes outside his house. Surpisingly there's a Lexicon box in there, although the Mail didn't pick up on that pieceSmile

I had an Arcam AVR300 and can highly recommend it indeed. It's excellent for movies and capable with music too - especially compared to most other makes at that price point.

If you're looking to stretch your budget a bit further I'd go for an Arcam DV79 over a DV29. Sonically, the DV29 is a stronger performer but the picture is almost identical. I had one too and it's picture via HDMI to a Pioneer 504 was stunning.

The DV79 can be had new for £1k although I believe Creative Audio were doing them for £849 or for £650-£750 second hand.

It might give you an extra few quid in your budget. I'd definitely recommend getting the best sub you can (within reason). It will make a phenomenal difference to your enjoyment of movies.

Anyway, you're in for a whole lot of fun auditioning that's for sure! Enjoy!
