Calling Neat Mystique owners

Posted by: Stephen H on 12 March 2003

Hi folks,

Just taken delivery of a pair of Neat Mystique II and I was wondering if any of you could let me know how long they take to come on song?

The 'instructions' suggest around 50 hours, does this tally with your experience?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

More like 80 to 100 hours and some will tell you more. I hated them when I first hooked them up and couldnt see what the fuss was about.

Now I understand after like 100 or more hours of break-in.

Phew, thanks for that comment "onlythat".
They're fit to rip your ears off at the moment, but I know it's going to be worth the wait.

I'm leaving them on all day whilst at work to speed the process up.

No problem. Mike Saeling gave me the exact same reassurance when I had the problem. I wondered what the hell the problem was because they were TERRIBLE.

Then they got better and better and now they are a lot of fun! They sound beautiful-- balanced and tuneful. Yours will too.

David & Steve,

So, how are they going?

Going along great Mike. Except my system is at NAIM for a re-cap. I have since tried them against several speakers in my home, including the original Rega Ela, Kans and Snell type K's and nothing has come close to their overall performance (except for their smaller brethren, the Critiques).

Snells had the better midrange, Kans were faster and Elas a sweeter top-- but none were as involving for me and all the others had some major shortcoming or other which I couldn't live with.

When my 72 gets back, it will join its old friend the Hicap and it will be introduced to a new friend-- a NAP 250.

Then they will all be introduced to the Mystiques, for which I have purchased Mana soundbases, (again courtesy of your recommendation), and which I have yet to hear the effect of.

So I will be factoring in a 250 AND the Manas simultaneously, leaving me unsure as to the effect of each singulary. However...

If it all sounds spectacular (as I hope it will) then I dont CARE what's contributing what.

Review shortly... and thanks for all your advice and recs.

David

PS-- the only speaker I havent yet heard against them that I'd like to is a set of SBLs. I am considering buying a second hand pair just for the shootout. Winner takes all and loser finds a new home.

Also-- I want to state that when I opened the Mana box I almost wanted to cry for what was in there vs. what I paid. I mean-- couldnt you build those stands for like 30 bucks?? I hope the sound is what I'm paying for, cause there sure aint enough parts in there for 400 bucks-- and like you said-- could their nuts be any GREASIER!!!??

It's going great thanks Mike.

They took about 5-6 days of continuous playing, showing a steady improvement each time I got home from work.

All that remains to do now is fit the spikes and sort out the final positioning. Matters were slightly complicated by the addition of a Hicap the week before last, and a week of the sistem being off whilst I was on holiday.

The speakers are simply fantastic though.

Regards,
Steve.

Glad things worked out. I realize there's few things more annoying than that "yes they sound like crap, but wait 5000 hours and they'll be fine" cliche.

I've always been curious- how Mystiques react to a 250 vs. 140, Dave...

I bet you'll forget about the Critique and SBL once they're in. It goes against every fibre of my being, but those little boxes of wood and greasy metal are somehow good VFM.

Greasy nuts are surely a sign of quality.

P.S.
Still not entirely convinced about my rack, mind you. I never did find that getting into the racks gave me that "like soundbases, only more" effect.
Now that I think about it, the nuts for my racks weren't nearly as greasy as the ones for my soundbases.

Mike, I'll let you know about the 250 soon as she's up and running. I am sure it will be kickin. Also, I may hold off on buying sbls for comparison.

You really think the soundbases are THAT GOOD huh??

I am actually very happy with the NEATs, it's just with stuff like Kans and SBLs and EPOS ES11's always being discussed warmly and fuzzily here, I get curious from time to time and wonder if these 'classics' are really much better than what I've got.

Sure I usually end up losing a few hundred bucks in the buy-and-sell, but at least my curiosity is satisfied.

NAIMGAIM-- sorry man, but I found out that in buying Mana direct, you get a 30 day trial period. If I dont like 'em, they go back. Otherwise, youda been my man.

Dont worry, I'll pick up some other odds and bits from you in the future, Bat Boy.
