Student Top Up fees

This one has probably been covered already, however:
I am just amazed at what seems to have been a Government "own goal" here. They have actively strived for, and largely achieved a huge increase in the numbers of students entering Higher Education. I cannot comprehend why they did not seem to forsee the concomitant deamands on funding, and the implications of this, viz the need to raise this money from somewhere, and the likely public response to this
The debate about whether it is a Good Thing for 50% of the "age cohort" to go to university is another interesting angle on this
Working in the state run education sector, I obviously have a special interest in this area

I believe that this comment can be expanded without any argument to include this current government and it's benefactors.

During the last few months on this forum several members employed in the NHS as doctors have expressed their loyalty to the NHS and indicated no desire to go into private practice. Their view was that the state had educated them at great expense and that it now was pay back time by working for the NHS for life - I was very impressed by these statements
Over the last weekend there were forecasts that medical students will enter work with excessive debts (the result of a combination of expensive courses and long period of study)
Will the new medical practitioners in 10 years time have any loyalty to the NHS - or will they be out to private practice as soon as they can to pay back their debts - they will have minimal loyalty to the state that made them pay for their education.
Just my 2p

It'll be interesting if an enquiry comes about later to WHY people are now turning coats, and ensuring a Government victory this evening on this subject ?

As usual Tony and his cronies successfully turned this from a vote on the issue to a confidence vote in him and his government (as per Iraq).
Personally I've rarely been as sickened by British politics as I was by the vote last night.
As for the Scottish Labour MP's voting in favour it was unfortunate that they carried a devolved issue by such a large amount, however it should be borne in mind that Scottish labour would also have introduced tuition fees up here given the chance (not because they like but because they too will mainly do as they're told). The Liberal Democrats made abolishment of tuition fees a mandatory condition before selling out on everything else for a sniff of power in a co-alition government with Labour.
