Wish list for the n-Serve application

Posted by: Jan-Erik Nordoen on 12 October 2010

Seeing that Christmas isn't that far away, here's my wish list for consideration by the Naim elves currently updating the n-Serve app :

1/ A higher definition version for the iPad (presumably under development)

2/ Ability to access playlists created on the Serve

3/ Ability to edit names of composers to surname then first name (currently only sortable by first name, this is really not practical for classical music where the rest of the world goes by surname first... and Johann was a popular name in past centuries!)

4/ Cover-flow, as in iTunes and others

5/ Higher resolution images of album covers (iTunes does this better)

6/ Inclusion of links to PDF files of CD booklets, when these are available (see for example the Analekta website)

I'm sure others will have things to add.

Thank you all for your consideration and your good work and hope to hear from you soon Winker

Are you saying the n-Serve app does not allow to select and play .m3u files?

Being new to ripping/tagging, I am very surprised that "Composer" is a unique tag. Intuitively it would me much more convenient to have 2 tags instead of one:
- Composer First Name
- Composer Last Name.

1. Generate quick play Random (500 track)
2. Volume control of connected Naim Amplifier
3. Change CD drive Rip/play mode

In order of priority:

1. Compilations - ability to have a different artist name for individual tracks than for album.
2. Track view (same as album view, but by trackname).
3. Cover flow view.
4. Volume control of connected Naim amp.

Volume control....
is an announced feature of the NDX, so it will be included in the N-Stream; but it will not work with the Qute and the Uniti; the unit needs a RC5 output.
As said somewhere here, you can use a remote App to control your analog gears.

You have to understand the Naim hierarchy: the Qute and the Uniti are made to be used as stand alone units, so there is no integration capability with other (Reference Series) units. The NDX is the right product for that, and it includes this remote control facility, power supply upgrade and so on...

But I understand the problem: the Qute is so good and so ''affordable'' that Naim customers want to use it as a streamer...but do not expect for full blown features... It is already exceptional....

Yes.

Composer does seem to be a unique tag in the All Music Guide database. Your suggestion is good ; hopefully, the n-Serve developers can develop a workaround.

In the end convenience and simplicity trumps everything. The Qute and Uniti are so good that their relatively minor sonic deficiencies are more than matched by their ease of use and lack of fuss.

Could Naim have made them even better.
Could Naim have diven them an nDac heart?

Of course but that would have made them far too expensive and cannibalised their other ranges.

Computer based hifi, streamers and digital storage are changing the game.

And an easier way to get back to root directories.

The slider bar is present: just tick on the album cover to let it appear at the top of the screen...
