Boxing ring entrance music

Posted by: jcs_smith on 27 August 2006

I’ve been persuaded to take part in a boxing and savate tournament in France and I’m having trouble on choosing my ring entrance music. On the few occasions I’ve done this before I’ve used either The Ride of the Valkeries or Carmina Burana but they’ve already been taken by other fighters – the influence of Jerome Le Banner there.
The whole point of ring music is to psyche yourself up, so it’s common to use something that gets your blood pumping, that’s why most people use rap or metal or something that will get the crowd on your side, like Ricky Hatton’s use of Blue Moon. Another option is to make a point to the opposition, like Lennox Lewis using Bob Marley’s Mash Dem Crazy Baldheads.
I did think of Monty Pythons’ Always look on the bright side of life or Barrington Levy’s Broader than Broadway because they make me feel good but I think I need something more aggressive with a stronger message. Bob Marley’s War would probably be too slow and too intellectual. LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out is too obvious and has been taken already. Napalm Death’s Scum or Torture Garden’s Jazz Snob Eat Shit would be good but since they only last around 10 seconds I wouldn’t get to the ring before they’d finished. Laibach would be good – aggressive and austere but the track I want I’ve only got on scratchy vinyl. It uses samples from the Faust symphony but I don’t know who wrote it so I can’t find the original. Anyone got any suggestions?

Steppin Razor by Peter Tosh is probably a little too laid back, so how about Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy?

How about "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" - Tomoyasu Hotei. Otherwise known as that guitar bit at the beginning of the Crazy 88 fight sequence in Kill Bill, perhaps a little overused...

I know what would blow their minds - "Arrakis" by Black Sun Empire... oh yes! HEAVYYY!!! Try the clip here http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF138962-01-01-01.mp3

If there is such a thing, an instrumental of Two Tribes - FGTH. I'm sure there will be one on a 12" somewhere

Lieutenant Pigeon's Mouldy Old Dough would be my choice, but then it often is.

This is just what we used to do in my rowing days in the '80s - pasta fest the night before listening to end-to-end Motorhead, then in the minibus going to the regatta listening to ... yes, you've guessed it, Motorhead.

How successful was this strategy? Well, it's not me with five Olympic golds round my neck...

Amir Khan needs a song that lasts longer than his fights. Anything longer than 50 seconds should do going by last nights destruction. That lad is gonna be one of the greats for sure. Cool

Well I used Traumspieler by Laibach for the savate bouts and Holiday in Guantanamo by Method of Defiance for the boxing. To be honest though, I fought 3 times in savate and twice in boxing (came second in both finals) but I didn’t really notice the music or the reaction to it – I was trying too hard to focus on the fight. While I was waiting though one of the other fighters entered the ring to Carmina Burana and it was a strange feeling – I started getting tense. I had the same problem watching the Amir Khan fight – he uses Carmina Burana as well. Clinton Woods used Going Underground by the Jam. Great record but lyrically I’m not sure it was a good choice for a boxing match.
