Wish list for remasters

Posted by: steve10 on 07 January 2008

Since rightly ore wrongly selling my vinly, I could never fathom why van morrisons back catalogue had been neglected in terms of cd remastering. Great delight then on learning that an ongoing reissue program is underway with the live 'It's To Late To Stop Now' album coming out on Jan 28th.
What other remasters would members like to see available?

The Beatles entire catalogue

Its a crime and really [to me] unexplainable the up to now digital neglect that the so called 'Holy Grail'of rock music has been subject to. The taster I guess is the 'yellow submarine' cd issued around 1999 which sounds pretty good.

I would love to see Court and Spark, Miles of Isles and For the Roses.

Maybe because you can get more copies of The Beatles on Vinyl than you can eat.

As I never tire of reminding this forum, all Joni's albums were remastered in true HDCD in the USA about 6 years ago, and sound fantastic. Over here, we've had inferior versions, and the reissue programme planned for 2007 was apparently shelved.

Other Warners LPs:

Astral Weeks (but Van won't allow it)
Moondance (probably ditto)
Little Feat's LPs from the 1970s
Ry Cooder's ditto up to 1982

...oh, and the Beatles too.

Munch

It should come out like a famous song title IMHO -Yesterday. Oh Well, if they want my money they know what to do - please release them. It must be that Apple has spent too much effort on that iPod thingie instead of releasing their greatest asset Smile

A CD version (let alone a remaster) of Wishbone Ash's Live Dates 2 would be good.

Agree about the Beatles, the quality of the Love remaster has whetted the appetite.

Did you not get them then? It's easy enough to get the US copies.

The US CDs are often better anyway, particularly if the artist is based there. The Japanese CDs are usually excellent but more costly, however they can be worth it too.

I think one of the biggest artists not to have remasters done is Neil Young. Probably cause he hates the CD format but just loves DVD-A.

Ewemon,

Munch brought this round, and it was on the next courier to me. The sound is superb.

Bruce Springsteen, particularly Born to Run, The River and Born in the USA, all of which seem to have a poor sound whether on vinyl or CD

Richard,

Born to Run was released in 2005 in a boxset format remastered. It does clean up the sound a bit. The boxset is worth having for the two DVD's that come with it, particularly the Hammersmith Odeon concert.

I usually get mine from Amazon.com (as opposed to .co.uk).

I use the Amazon marketplace in the US. It contains new and used copies from smaller US retailers, which I find are more likely to supply US discs. Watchout for larger retailers who source discs from South America and other countries. Discs usually cost under $10 and postage is about $6.

They are not always better than the Euro equivalent, but they often are. Sometimes the differences are not small.

Pretty much anything as long as it's not done with 'Loudness war' attitude.

Or second hand 1980's CD's that often was done with a minimum of processing.

Perhaps Mr Young has never heard a Naim Audio CD player! : )

Neil Young Greatest Hits

Original master tapes transferred by John Nowland at Redwood Digital, Woodside CA
Digitally mastered by Tim Mulligan at Redwood Digital.

I know many people avoid the 'greatest hits' or 'best of' albums and i often do myself, but Neil Youngs Greatest Hits ablum on CD is really really good. I would dearly love to expand my Neil Young collection because i've a lot of time for his music. The few albums of his i do own tend to stay on the shelf with this cd getting played because is sounds so satisfying.

MCC - The Calling, but this time forego the car friendly mix and turn down the volume - Mary's too great to be treated this way.

If you think the CD NY Greatest Hits is good (which it is, especially at £4 from Tesco) try the Classic Records cut.

The blurb -

The LPs were cut, from a 30ips compiled analog master overseen by Neil himself, at Bernie Grundman Mastering. This release was anticipated by hundreds upon hundreds of our customers and now we can tell you with unbridled enthusiasm, this release is bar-none, the finest sounding Neil Young record ever pressed!

abbydog - Much as i would love to try this, my medium is cd only : )

An object lesson in pissing off music buyers (no change there, then).

Two releases of the classic album "Moontan" by Golden Earring.

On the top, the original track listing. BUT, in the wrong artwork and the sound is pretty "early CD type" average.

On the bottom, the remaster in decent sound and with the correct artwork. BUT, one of the original great tracks (Big Tree, Blue Sky) removed and two ropey fillers added. Oh, and the running order changed. Grrr. Red Face

Why?

The cover with the earring on it was for the US market only and the naked lady was European issue. Not sure but MCA who used to handle them in the States may have objected to the naked lady cover.

Steve,
To be sure you get the right ones, you have to do what I did - pop over to NYC or Boston and get along to the megastores. Of course, I had other things to do too...
