Wish list for remasters

Posted by: steve10 on 07 January 2008

Since rightly ore wrongly selling my vinly, I could never fathom why van morrisons back catalogue had been neglected in terms of cd remastering. Great delight then on learning that an ongoing reissue program is underway with the live 'It's To Late To Stop Now' album coming out on Jan 28th.
What other remasters would members like to see available?

Bach Brandenburg Concertos: On DG Archiv, recorded in 1950 and 1953 by the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, directed by August Wenzinger. Really the pioneering effort with period instruments, though actually not quite in one or two respects, but the music making has got everything you could possibly ask for in these concertos, and the kind of recording that will never again be made!

The balances are made more than usually lucid by the almost entire exclusion of blurring hall acoustic! I suspect a medium sized hall was used, but heavily damped, and very pleasing the result is! Good mono sound, well balanced, lets every detail of the musicians performance through.

Never been released on CD. An amazing over-sight!

Superb album, dreadful production.

Agree to that. One of the three, four best albums ever made, in my book.

Two releases of the classic album "Moontan" by Golden Earring.

I happen to have a german "remaster" from the early 1990's, I think it was a series of many classic rock albums that where called "Soundz" or something like that that, anyway, it sounds fab and has the "proper" cover.

Johan,

I'm not jealous at all. Razz

Bit irritating that all the Paul Simon albums were remastered 2-3 years ago and all have vanished from the stores apart from Graceland. Looking for the remasters of 'Rhythm of the Saints' and 'In Concert' (1991).

RB,

Try a well known auction site. They sometimes turn up there.

Just checked and Amazon have the remastered RotS.

The Kinks' katalogue from the 1960's. Where those albums and singles are available on CD, the sonics range from disappointing to ghastly. My dream would be for whoever controls the master tapes to have Steve Hoffman remaster everything from The Kinks through Arthur inclusive, plus a definitive two-disc compilation of A-sides, B-sides and a few significant album tracks like "David Watts".

I have to hear from you Steve S1 if you heard Beatles "Love" on CD or LP?

I have compared the track "Something" on "Love" to my older DMM remastering of the same number on "Abbey Road".
The "Love" version is not up to the standard of the DMM version.
This done on LP only!

The thing that often happen when they work with sound in computers (as on "Love") is that it all ends up out of tune! You can hear it all clearly but in the end its like the instruments have been recorded seperately in slightly different pitch.

An exsample of a fantastic remastering is the Queen album "A night at the opera".
Because of the somewhat bad quality of the mastertape they had to use the far more costly analoge half speed remastering (instead of digital remastering). It is kept in tune and clearer and more colourful.

Sorry for the long rambling, but as you all can read I am a bit pessimistic about digital remastering (at least when transferred to vinyl).

Hello JBD,

I'm talking about the CD. "Love" sounds superb on my CDS3. The Abbey Road CD is one of the better CDs - but not in that class.

Taking "Come Together" - on Abbey Road it sounds pretty good. On Love it re-arranges your internal organs. Big Grin

I believe the vinyl (from memory) was better than the CDs but that isn't hard. I look forward to the release of the re-mastered CDs and if they meet the standard of the "Love" release - I'll be happy.

I'm sure you guys remember that Love is a remix, right? Therefore, meeting the Love standard on a Beatles reissue series means remixing everything. Not something I fear, but the purists would scream!

Why of why don't those stupid record companies re-master and release some of the greatest music ever to come from Toronto.

Martha Johnson (Martha and the Muffins) explains why one of the greatest band on the planets's albums are not generally available on C.D (or vinyl)?

The short answer is that our former record labels, Virgin Records in the U.K. and BMG Canada have little or no interest in reissuing our back catalogue. Virgin released a C.D. compilation, "Far Away in Time" in 1987, an indiscriminate selection of tracks with no input from the band, taken mainly from the "Metro Music" and "Trance and Dance" albums while almost totally ignoring "This Is The Ice Age". BMG Canada has never reissued any of the three albums that they control.

Since aquiring sub-licensing rights from Virgin and BMG, our goal is to reissue those albums in greatest demand (This Is The Ice Age and Danseparc lead the way so far) along with bonus tracks from the same sessions. Financing these projects is the only major obstacle and avenues are currently being explored to make things happen.

The best overview of MatM/M+M's seven album releases to date is Then Again - A Retrospective, the EMI/Muffin Music C.D. compilation released in 1998.

If you are interested you get it direct from Muffin Music in Canada - I've bought things from Muffin and they are very trust worthy - I overpaid by £1 because of the change in exchange rates and they returned my £1

I hope Martha can fund a re-release of Danseparc or perhaps they can make the songs available for download - it's a thought.

Dear All,

One of my favourite albums of all time is:

Steve Miller Band

Recall the beginning a journey from eden.

I have it on vinyl but would dearly to have the CD . To my knowledge this has never been issued on CD.

So i would love for it to be released on CD.

regards David
