sony sxrd

any experience with new type of rear projection TV? I just came from the local store and got to compare LCD, plasma, and the new sony. I must say, that the sony was pretty darn good. Unfortunately, it is 19" deep and I guess that is the main negative. I want a 50" screen so that LCD is out for now. I guess I am a little hesitant about plasma sets (burning in images, less lifespan) and the sony will cost about the same or perhaps slightly less that most 50" plasmas. Anybody have an opinion? david

Don't know about the RPTV but front-projection wise the new Sony SXRD (the 'Ruby') is currently sending shock-waves through the projector world. Released about two weeks ago. I don't think it's too much of an exageration to say that it's chopped the legs away from underneath the hi-end stuff and very quickly is now in a position of totally dominating (what was) the mid-range.

It'll be interesting to see how the 'boutique' DLP manufacturers respond but the days of crazy prices for high-end projectors appear to be over.

The word is "stunning". My friend Simon [another Naim member in our small Naim group in Toronto, Canada] recently purchased the 60 inch model and he likes it very much. I got the 40 inch LCD Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 a week after and we both very happy with the products. I see all Sony models in Toronto, including the 15,000 dollars Qualia and I must say that Sony really know how to make TVs.

Tuan--

Then can we assume that you haven't found any troubling motion artifacts on the LCD Bravia? I've seen this set in stores and it looks good, but Frank Abela's remarks on LCD problems have made me wary. Any comments would be appreciated.

Frank's statement talks about a generic issue that applied to all LCDs. My own experience is the Sony has it under control as good as the current technology allows for the LCD TVs. It is barely noticeable especially when I use the Bravia with the 200 dollars Sony DVD player that do progressive scan and upscaling, cinema motion etc. My own experience is that the Bravia products are very good, Simon and I we are both happy. If you have the money , it is worth go to see them, just like Naim CD players: They are expensive and they still not as good as an LP12 as some people saying. Well, if you want a CDP not a turn-table, what choices are there?
