Security for your Naim

Posted by: Spock on 15 November 2005

I was burgled not so long ago and my car was stolen along with camera’s and PC etc. Fortunately my system was not stolen although it had been pulled from it’s racking. A close call.

Since the theft I have had an alarm fitted, marked my postcode on the cases with a UV marker, and fitted blinds to the front window to obscure the "view" to the passing world. Having been robbed this still does not seem enough.

It struck me that I still have no physical security in place such as something tying the components to the rack for example. It would be good if the cases were designed in a way that would enable you to tie them down. I doubt this is even possible.

Considering the values we attach to our systems I was wondering what steps you have taken to make your systems secure from theft?

Regards

Don't live in Swindon.

If you attached the equipment to the rack, then the thief would just damage the rack to get the equipment out.

Other than having an alarm system for your home, there's not much you can do. That's what homeowner's insurance is for.

What Taylor said.

Concentrate your efforts on keeping the buggers out in the first place - once they are in, they'll take what they want and cause as much damage as they like in the process. End result: belongings gone but more mess to clear up after.*

If you're still concerned, get the Crime Prevention Officer round for some advice - they are pretty helpful.

* CPO gave me that piece of advice when I was considering fitting lockable internal doors. He said they'd just kick those in and then take everything anyway.

Seconded on the CPO! Before your burglary! Not afterwards, like most of us. Roll Eyes

"...offers you protection for your valuable household items..."

It might help after stolen goods are recovered but I can't see how it "protects".

A decent new-for-old policy with accidental damage is what you need.

However, this isn't very good if you are one of those who prefer the sound of their Olive kit to the new Classic series. Winker
