Turntable or Fraim

Posted by: Martin C on 14 February 2004

Hi there,

Need some advice from you guys. Upgraditis strikes again, I am thinking about to get a turnable or Fraim. The turntable would be AVID Diva with SME 309 arm and Ortofon MC25FL or the Fraim (two 2 shelves)

My system is CDSII/XPS/NAC82/Supercap/NAP250/SBL

I have around 100 vinyls at the moment.

I think at the end of the day, I will get both, but what do you reckon which should I get first.

Your advice is highly appreciated.

cheers

Hy martin! i would decide first to go for the
turntable (if i knew which one).then you can hear all your music.later on you go for the fraim to get the best quality out of your system.

Hi Martin

What is the kit sitting on at the moment?
Posted on: 14 February 2004 by Martin C
Hi J.N.,

They are sitting on the soundstyle 5 shelves silver rack. Fraim will improve the system dramatically accoring to the comments from other forum members. I demo'd the Fraim once with Quadraspire standard and reference stand, Fraim is miles ahead in term of soundstage, music separation.

O.J.,

I am going to get AVID Diva with SME 309 arm and Ortofon MC25FL.

cheers

Martin

Nice system. Do you want to hear what it's really capable of?

You know it makes sense.

Thanks for your advice, guys!

I did not have a turntable for long long time. When I got the CDSII and all others around 2 years ago. I demo Michell Gryodec against CDSII, at the end I bought the CDSII, rather than Gyrodec and active system, so CDSII is not bad in my opinion. Once AVID Diva comes along, I think it's time, I think I will place the order next week.

Hi Martin,

I happened to pick up a Dutch HiFi magazine yesterday, and while going through the pages I saw a picture of the new AVID Diva, and....
for me it was love at first site!

So,...just out of curiosity, what's the price of the AVID Diva ? (withouth arm)

Btw, I think I'd also go for the TT first.

Hi Alco,

It's £1,100, it comes with the separate power supply, so it's even better value than Gyrodec and apparently sound better.

Not sure how much is Diva selling in Holland? 20% dearer?

Hello Martin,

I wonder if you are the same Martin who bought my Mana soundbases off me? In any event I told you so (so you can trust my advice).

In your situation, and knowing you like the same type of music as me, I would suggest that a 52 (and a second hand Linn LP12) might make a bigger difference than teh AVID (which is really boring in the PRAT department in my opinion). The Fraim will also improve things, but to get themost from what you have I would.

1. Try a 52
2. Used Linn
3. Fraim

Hope this helps.

...or you could get the Diva and a graphic equalizer, to get that nice Linn hass hump without having to piddle about with the deck going off every two seconds Smile

Avid decks are LAVISH though - I've heard the Volvere and Acutus (I think) when Audio-T Reading were evaluating them - Love's Forever Changes sounded amazing on them... IS the Diva suspended? That's the one thing that puts me off the Michells over the Rega I have (even though I can use my mate's Orbe OK - I still get nervous of all that wobbly stuff attached to a bloody expensive MC cartridge!!!).

Personally, I'd defo go for the Avid first, and think long and hard about the Fraim. It's a shedload of dosh just for a rack - I seriously fail to see how a Fraim can be worth HOW MUCH more sonically than any other capable rack - I mean, look how expensive it is compared to even Mana or Clearlight!

I KNOW my Target stuff is crap, but the most I could justify, even if I HAD the money, is Q4 Ref (Mana's got glass on - with my eyesight I'm liable to bust it!!!).

If you go for an LP12 make sure it has a cirkus if it's going on a Fraim. The older bearings make the LP12 sound compressed and bloated in comparison to a good CD player.

Try and hear a newer LP12 with the tightened top plate on a Fraim. The difference is not subtle.

Dom - Hope you don't think I'm being a "know it all" but up 'till recently I owned 2 Lp12s and did a direct comparison.

And there is no comparison.

Try it.

Hi Dev,

Indeed it's me who bought the soundbases from u, I am using them for my Intro as rear, rather than the SBL. Are you still thinking about to sell your 52? I thought you would settle for your hutter rack, I was a bit surprised that you got the fraim.

Anyway, I think I am going to go for both AVID & Fraim ( I will certainly come to you for some set up advice). A recent 52 still interests me, it has to be in very good condition.

I demo'd a fraim before compare to Quadraspire rack (both standrad and reference), the difference was amazing! Even they just move around the CD player only!

What about cartridge? Sumiko BPS is too delicate, so how about Ortofon MC25FL? Or any other good recommendation?

cheers

Martin

I went from soundstyle 5 shelves black rack to fraim. Big difference.
Did you fill the rack with sand or similar? It gave me a good improvement.

Emil

Hi Emil,

I did not fill any sand in the rack. I am also use the soundstyle AV rack for TV and AV stuff.

I am going to get 2 Fraims (bases + 2 selves)
One for the CDSII+NAC82+XPS and one for AVID/Supercap/NAP250, NAPSC will be put on the floor.

Will place the order tomorrow.

cheers

Hi Martin,

Wow, 2 Fraims & also the AVID Diva.... Roll Eyes
I think I'm getting a little bit jealous now.
(except when I think about the bill Big Grin )

Can you post some system pics when the Fraim & the AVID TT have arrived and being setup.
I'd love to drool over something so beautiful Smile
