Metal Contact on CD3.5 for Puck
Posted by: markjp on 23 November 2002
I have just noticed after cleaning puck and metal contact on CD3.5 that the metal surface is coming off on the CDP. It looks like the metal is only a coating on plastic. Has anyone else noticed this and would I have to return my CDP to Naim to be repaired?
thanks

The surface of the metal can be abraded by a slipping puck, but I have never known it to bite very deeply.
Try giving the surface a good scrub with blu-tack.
It really is worth buying a new puck once a year. Alternatively, check that the three magnets have not become depressed into the body of the puck, by comparing them with a new/good one.
If so; prise the top off the puck and push the magnets back through. The important bit is to get them level, so that the puck sits properly.
Good luck.

I think the metal surface started to come off when I was cleaning it with blu tak. It has come off at the centre where it meets a central plastic bit. I may be wrong, but the metal appears to be only a thin layer over plastic. I have now ordered A new puck as advised and because a few CD's have been skipping, but play fine on another CDP.If the metal surface deteriates further I presume I have to get my dealer to return CDP to Naim for some TLC.

It is the transport spindle that is magnetic, not the puck. Neither should need heavy cleaning and it should be unnecessary to change the puck once a year - I have had mine for 3 years now without problems. Do you leave CDs in the player overnight which might compress the rubber elements in the puck?

Hi
Here is a picture of the spindle on my Cd3.5, showing the metal in the cente that has started to come away. I am know wondering whether underneath the shinny metal is the magnet rather than plastic as i first thought.
Any comments ??

I mentioned this to my dealer yesterday. He thinks that there is a layer of metal over plastic.
Your picture indicates that the metal has become detached, rather than being abraded away by a slipping puck. Probably faulty manufacture. I'd get it to your dealer and back to Salisbury.
Word of warning - if it needs a whole new transport, you're looking at about £250. A friend recently bought a CD5, as it was uneconomic to pay for a new transport in his ageing CD3.
