CDRW

Posted by: jasons on 02 April 2006

Im wanting to save some word documents onto a cdrw disc on my cdrw drive.

However, every time i try it says its a read only disc.

Can windows format a cdrw which will then enable me to use it as a removable hard drive?

Cheers!

Having pratted around initially from 1998 with Windows itself/Roxio predecessor ('Easy Creator') my advice is to obtain a Nero 6 or above version and always to do CDR-CDRW-DVDR/RW etc via programme you come to know.

There are free downloadable progs which will burn reliably etc, but I favour Nero as I have had fine results with it ever since learning to avoid Windows own often confusing way or old Roxio-predecessor.

You might well find that you will learn instead of to use relatively slow-burning CDRW (2-12X usually ...) that you can start a multisession CDR-save your data files-add to them at a later date.

Provided you have selected 'standard file-formats' you should be able to use your unfinalized - or finalized - data CDR in any suitable PC etc.

I do use Philips CDRW/always have a box of 10, but at a fraction of price decent CDRs are quicker-cheaper-easier to use.

CDRWs can be quick or full formatted for 're-blanking' but they are usually about at least 5 times price of good CDR.

One slight drawback with CDRW is that even when burned as audio CD some CDP (which are supposed to play them - I won't tell you in Naim forum which ones ...) do not reliably play all of all songs ...

Do you have any CD/DVD burning software installed other than the stuff that comes with Windows XP?

I've always tended to steer clear of CDRW, I've known too many people get burned (no pun intended) when multisession discs mess up and they lose their data. IMHO it's not worth it with quality CDR's at around 20p each.

The reason i sk is that i used to have Roxio easy blah blah 6 on my old pc. However, when i tried to install it on this one, windows refuses to start up properly and i have to start in safe mode to remove it and start again.

i didnt make myself very clear about that Roll Eyes

Anyways, if Nero is the thing to go for then i might just do that as i have a fair bit of vinyl i need to get on cd.

Just out of interest, would the new Roxio 8 be any better or should i just go for Nero and have done with it?

Thanks again!

If you have Windows XP, and install a DVD-RAM drive, then you can drag-and-drop to a RAM disc, and it will be treated like a big (4.7GB) floppy disc.

The support is built directly into Win XP.

You can buy the drives for about £30, although they are a bit of hassle to install. They also read/write standard CDs & DVDs.

cheers, Martin

Having pratted about on a few others' PCs as well, I have noticed a tendency for early-Roxio and early-Nero to work usually as OEM supplied/installed programmes only with initial PC, and even not in same PC if CD-etc burning initially installed drives replaced by pristine new burner.

Do check around, but Nero 6 ++ or whatever which has plug-ins for video-DVD etc stuff is what I use and it works for me (there are demo copies around which work if you reset date on Windows to month of installation before each Nero-use) but I do not advise this as Nero 6 etc is worth buying at good price.
