attaching of foam grilles

Posted by: Adrian F. on 06 August 2002

Hi all!

This spring I bought s/h DBL's. big grin Like all classic naim speakers (IBL, SBL) they use foam grilles.
When they get older, and you remove the grilles, the fixing tape sticks better to the grilles than to the front plate of the speakers... mad

My local dealer spoke to naim and they told him, that this tape can easily be found local. But I ran around to every hobby/do-it-yourself/special shop around here, and no one has ever seen this product!
The standard velcro kind of tape (with small hooks like umbrella handles) are available everywhere, but it doesen't fit the rough structured holes in the foam. The original tape uses much less hooks per row, and they are shaped like the big letter "T" with serifes.

Can someone point me to a shop (local or internet) or knows about the brand or the correct name for this tape??

Thank's a lot and
happy listening

Adrian,

How about glueing the original Naim tape with the hook thingies back onto the speaker cabinet, using Superglue or something like that?

Adrian

Go to Naim or failing that ask them the name of the supplier who in turn will give you the name of a local stockist.

Thomas,

I don't like the glue directly on the wood surface - it will shurely damage it... when it would have been only a small corner, probably - but all stripes on the DBL's add up to almost 6 meters!

Mick,

You where right. I e-mailed naim about it. Yesterday evening I had a package in my mailbox from england big grin
They even pre-cut the tape to the right lenghts and draw a little sketch, where to fit the right lengt cool
btw. the tape is originally twice the width, they sliced it in the middle. I could have searched it forever and again elsewhere.

Thanks a lot to Paul Stephenson and the anonymous "cutter & draftsman"

Adrian,
thanks for the update.
i assume that the grill/strip on the IBL is the same as on the DBL (slimmer and a lot less).
question:
is the (grill supporting) strip basically like a tape where one peels off the base and sticks it onto the baffle...err requiring no glueing by the user ?

In the uk at most DIY shops you can get a product used over windows, its a kind of cheap mans double glazing. The pack contains polothyne and crucially quite a few metres of thin double sided clear tape which I would image would do a fine job!

about 5 quid

rohit: you are right, that's the way it should be... the tape stays on the baffle, you remove the pure foam only.

btw: yes it looks worse - but it sounds better
(and the expensive drivers are better protected).
