Improve your Carbon Footprint - Drink Tap water
Posted by: Diode100 on 08 May 2007
Here's a thought for all those those planet botherers out there - Drink Tap Water, don't buy into the mineral water scam ! Drink water from the tap, don't have it shipped from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, where ever. Use a glass that you can was and re-use, not a plastic bottle that will be here for the next few thousand years. Think about it, makes sense, doesn't it ?

Don't buy CD's either.
Listen to the radio.
A nice wind-up one.

Perhaps, but a significant compromise none the less, that some would not find acceptable. I've just returned to buying CD's after 18 months of downloading, so I can swing either way on that one.
As to the wind up radio, well, I'm with you on that, I had a wind up with an auxilliary solar cell that was briliant before it broke, quality control C-, design concept A+

The clockwork motor appears to have been omitted from my NAT05. Is it faulty?
Good point about the water though Diode. I put mine through a filter as it is so hard but it tastes perfectly ok. (Note to self: Drink More Water)

Totally agree. The water here in Christchurch is arguably the best in the world.
Certainly 12 years ago cruising around UK/Europe, I just could not get into buying bottled water, so did the healthy thing and bought coke instead

i live in l.a. where nobody drinks the water, it is pretty nasty. but the landfills are about half plastic water bottles. i use the reuseable ones.
but we're quite doomed environmentally. i do everything i can to recycle, etc., but how much difference does any of it make, really? what are the landfills in china like? the oceans are close to dead lakes. and australia will beome a complete desert in ten years. don't even get me started on nuclear waste. the human race does not appear to have the collective sense or will to deal with these issues. the central issue is, i think, that wealth in a modern capitalist society is based on obselescence, consumption, and marketing, which go counter to what is needed to rescue the planet. obviously psuedo-marxism was not so great, either, if you look at the rampant pollution in eastern europe and russia. does the naim forum have any brilliant concepts to introduce here?

I think I'll go and sit in the corner with a towell over my head...

In London I no longer buy water unless I fancy some of the sparkling stuff. The tap water is crap though. My solution - filtered incoming mains (still not enough); then Brita filter jug in the fridge. It works very well for me.
No idea about what effect that has on my carbon footprint though! I have recently bought a carbon frame bicycle if that helps?

Has anyone else 'given up' flying? We've decided to totally change our holiday habits, take the train/ferry and/or stay in the UK. Make the travel part of the holiday rather than something to be endured, and a nod to the environmental issue too.
We are also (and have been for a while) very good about food miles, we buy local and seasonal produce if and when possible.

For years I drank bottled water and recently got a Boots filter jug. It is amazing the amount of plastic you save and the filtered water tastes fine.

Bruce, I find that local vegetables are usually in season, which enhances the taste compared to flying in some hothouse grown variety at other times of the year. Seasonal eating also reintroduces a natural cycle to our cooking which I like.
On flying, I try and tag on a few days holiday to an existing work-related flight, if possible.
