New Speakers for Jeroen - The easy way!

Posted by: Jeroen P on 09 February 2004

Unlike Mr Tibbs and James, I will be doing the girly thing.....shopping Wink. I took delivery of my first Naim system last week, CD5/Nac112/Nap150/Naca5. Will be adding Flatcap2 'shortly'. Struggeling to decide on the speakers though and opinion/input requested from other Forum members.

Of the 2 sets I am currently auditioning, JM Lab Cobalt 816 and Royd RR2, I prefer the RR2. Excellent tight bass and very good all round sound. However I sometimes feel that the Royds are not as strong in treble something which I feel the Cobalts do quite well. I liked the Neat Elite but felt that £ for £ the JM Labs were the better package. Wandering if I should try the B&W 704 on home trail as I was initially tempted by these too. Do others have experience with this speaker? I definitely am NOT going to spend more than the £1450 these are retailing for so please no suggestions for speakers costing in excess of this.

Thanks for your input

SBL'S oooops.

Seriously I recently got some 2nd hand Rega Elas - don't know how much they are new , but they're not bad...

Not sure they're to you liking, but I couldn't find anything better floor standing than Totem Arros under 1500 euros (1000 GBP), do take a listen if you can, or the Staff a little further up for more bass (I still prefer the arros, though).

hi jeroen,
dont know what your musical tastes are ?? but if you like rock-club-blues etc. have a listen to a pair of pmc fb1s they have great bass and detail. i auditioned these with a similar system to yours and was impressed. they retail for around £1400.
but have seen pairs advertised for a lot less.
i eventually got a pair of ob1s which really do sing.!!!!
regards, scotty

Bear in mind the sound of your kit will likely change / improve over the next few weeks, so it may be worth waiting before you try Kabers Wink

HI,

You may consider adding a pair of Neat pettites on the end of your proposed sistem.

They work extremely well with Naim gear and many forum members use and enjoy them.

Thanks to all who have made suggestions. I have spent the past couple of weeks following up on some of the suggested speakers.

The Naim Intro's for instance were definetely not to my taste (sorry Idoru).

In the end I opted for the Royd RR2 after all. Found them to be the best all round package. When you listen to them you must remember to take its covers off though. Makes a hugh difference as I found to my embarrasment. Should have thought of that before Red Face
