24 hours in Chicago

Posted by: Steve Bull on 09 October 2010

Thanks to a work trip, I'll have an evening and a day mostly free to explore the city. Am staying centrally.

Any suggestions for things to see and do?

My wife did a Segway tour around the park. She enjoyed it. But then, she also went to Oprah - not you cup of tea, perhaps!

Steve,

I would definitely take one of the architecture tours, preferably a walking or a boat tour.

If possible avoid a boat tour that goes onto the lake as the boat spends quite a bit of time passing through the locks.

If you like art then the Chicago Art Institute and the Modern Art galleries are too good to miss. Also take a look at the big A Kapoor structure in Millennium Park

Also allow a good amount of time to get from the airport to the city and vice versa

If you have yet more time go out to see the Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Oak Park.

Take the CTA elevated train (Brown Line) north and get off anywhere, walk around, explore.

This was my old stomping ground and I miss it deeply!

In the evening have a steak. There are some good steakhouses in Chicago, my favourite:

... afterwards have a drink at the signature room (95th floor in the John Hancock Tower), relax and have stunning night views at the Chicago skyline.

Enjoy,

Steve

Why you you take an hour and pop in to see JS and the guys in Pro Musica? I also second the idea of dinner and a drink in The Signature Room. Fantastic on a clear night especially.

Cheers

Of all the city's in the USA Chicago is my favourite for many reason (For the record the worst so far is Mobile, Alabama)

Loads on offer, but the architectural tours are recommended. I'd suggest see what tours the Architectural Society of Chicago is doing, their river tour is great and the Segway tour while not so good for the architecture, you do get some history and it's a great fun and a way to get a view of lakeside Chicago. Segways are easy to ride.

Go for a meal at Moto or Alinea, two very leading edge restaurants. If you go for the full tasting menu then expect the meal to be 4 hours long. Not cheap but an amazing experience, suggest you check out their websites.

Have cocktail, in the bar Hancock tower, very touristy but fun and great for the view just the same.

Ride the "L"

If you can, since your there for only 24 hours book what you can ahead.

House of Blues is worth a go, from memory it's on N.Halstead, but it's been several years since I went there. Get there early.

I also seem to remember that Hooters is on the intersection of Eerie and Wells... ;o)
