Andy - The whole Hod
Posted by: bivalve on 26 October 2006
Andy,
In my parts the expression 'the whole hog' has been around since I was a kid, but recently you used 'the whole hod' with the apparent same meaning. Well, we're probably an isolated community down here and perhaps someone a long time ago misheard hod, a word he wasn't familiar with, as hog. Can you vouch for 'the whole hod' as the original saying?
Recently we reclaimed the saying 'on tenterhooks' after 'on tenderhooks' had been in use for many years.
Yours pedantically,
David

Hi David,
I'm going to stick me neck out here and wager that it was but a simple spelling mistake.
FWIW, a 'hod' - at least in this country AFAIK - is a thing that builders use to carry a quantity of bricks over their shoulder. Always reminds me of a quote from a piece I read somewhere about the legendary Led Zep sticks-man John Bonham, in which, no doubt in reference to his former occupution, he was described as a "'pyschopathic hod-carrier from Birmingham".
Just about summed him up really!

Tenters frames on which "fulled" cloth was stretched, held by tenterhooks. Fulling was the removeal of oils and dirt from the cloth. Stretching the cloth kept the threads straight.
"on tenterhooks" therefore under pressure/tension.

My dad uses the term 'whole hod' referring to an impliment used to carry bricks - he said filling half a hod was a waste of time and to fill it all the way up..etc etc.... He was a brick layer and clerk of works for a city council building dept, amongst other things...
JonR - I see your point - but alas u r incorrect this time...

Hods are not allowed on site anymore.
I don't know why because it is the safest and easiest way to carry 12 bricks.
Another health and safety law gone mad.
Still, as long as you have a probably out of date hard hat on and a flappy fly away high viz on you should become indestructable.
