LP12 Ground lead

Posted by: Steve Crouch on 20 January 2003

I recentlty spent the evening moving around all my Naim boxes so that the power amps and supplies were located on a separate rack and to the right of the CDS2, 52 and Snaxo. This improved matters no end and made for much easier cable dressing. However, my problem now is that the earth lead from the LP12 does not reach the 52 (bummer). I have 2 alternatives, either move the Mana wall self or somehow extend the earth lead. I'd rather do the latter so can it be done without detriment to sound quality?

It is the lead that goes to the earth terminal on the 52, betwix the 2 BNC phono connections. My LP12 has Prefix so the signal from the turntable is via the Snaic to my Supercap. Where do I order the lead - Linn I presume?

Steve how comes you earth lead don't reach but the BNCs do, like mine I thought they were the same length.

Anyhoo I think most would find it hard to argue that that the earth lead is little more than some black wire with a spade terminal at each end.

Because I have a Prefix. The leads coming out of the LP12 are:-

Lead to Armageddon to power the motor/platter
Snaic to Supercap to power the Prefix
Earth lead to 52

I'll try it without the ground lead and if it doesn't sound as it should I'll just use mains earth cable instead.

Andrew

Does this also apply to Prefixed LP12's ie where power supply is earthed?

The length and quality of the TT earth wire are not critical, Just add on any old bit of wire to get the length you want.

I have not read anything in the 52 manual to suggest the earth from the TT be disconnected if a Naim CDP is connected to another socket. I would be grateful for clarification.

I think the earth lead on the prefix set up just earth's the prefix case and is not a signal earth.??protects from RFI
Disconnecting mine make no audible difference

Well, I would tend to trust the views expressed, but still think Naim would say "don't connect TT ground to this pre-amp, when using a CDP" if they had found it sounded better.
Wouldn't my experienced Linn/Naim dealer have advised snipping the LP12s internal earth from the arm to the plinth?

As per recommended on this forum I tried disconecting the earth lead from my LP12 into the NAC 82 (and I have a CDSII). With it connected it did NOT hum. After disconnecting there was a mild hum.

I connected it again.

Obviusly this is something that can vary from case to case.

Spent last night playing with my LP12 ground lead into 52 with CDS2 fitted.

Yes the ground removed reduces noise very slightly BUT I get a huge great bang from the speakers every time I change the record, which I assume must be due to static build up which was previously draining to earth?
